Title: Lake Arthur 2017 - 2018
Post by: ducksnbucks36 on Dec 10, 2017, 01:20 PM
Getting to be that time, and after last years terrible ice year I’m itching to get out.   Found a few “new” brush piles this year I planning to hit, and got a slew of new gear to use.

Have to find me first lol.  Rolling incognito for a little in a new vehicle and shanty.  Should’ve got a new auger or parts for mine instead seeing how my primer button decided to magically break off laying on the ice last year.  But oh well just got to suck in on the primer tube to prime her.

Long term forecast changes again for the third time too plummeting the the temps out of the 40’s to mid 30’s and now no rain but snow. I’d rather have the rain on the ice that’ll freeze in a night since the nights will be dipping to the teens and 20’s than snow

With all the wind they are calling for tomorrow, I'm hoping the snow that fell today will be blown mostly off?  If it sits on the new ice we may lose our chance to get out this weekend due to the insulation effect.

Wind hurt the ice a little today and opened up a couple spots that were locked up on Muddy Creek. I’m guessing someone will try this weekend but not me! I prefer Tom stay warm and dry.
Here’s some pics I’ll get more tomorrow.

It’s calm and 10 degrees right now.  Just hope the lake can get some ice built on those spots that were thin and the wind blows from the right direction and it should be fine. Still doubt I’d be on it this weekend though.... bu I do know where there’s fishavle ice 😉

i was there talking to him. He was only about 10 feet from sure. In 4 feet of water. I personaly walked out on it.. I drilled a 4 inch hole about 20 feet from him because i didnt want any extra weight near me... There was about 2 inches of clear ice and about 2 inches of wet slush.... I got back off... If the top layer of slush freezes. I will be on... Please use good judgement out there

how much snow on top of ice
when i was there yesterday it was different all over. Some bare. Some with 4 inch and others with a lot of slush. My guess is that the wind blew to certain areas and the areas that got a lot of sun yesterday is what turned to slush. More snow near the banks. Less out toward middle

Drive by LA this morning predator hunting hoping some of this snow on there melts and refreezes but it’s getting there.   Hit a local pond and had a good sold 4 inches or so of ice.  Fished from 9 to 12 and hammer the slime rockets and some gills.  All on the secret plastic.

That was me out there.  Stay close to shore tomorrow if you go out. Everything that's gray is bad  the snow has water under it  most measured was 2.5.   The patch to the left of where you walk on is basically just slush.  As seen in picture from bigfathead  the frozen slush that looks white felt ok. I'd suggest waiting unless you are prepared to go for a swim

nice to meet you out there today beck... I hopenot too many guys venture out there tomorow.. Like you said. Most likely there will be quite a few out there tomorow . and most likely somebody is going through... Be safe.. As for everybody else... If you have not been there the last few days to actually see with your own eyes. I suggest staying off.. Yesterday there was a lot of open water patches. Today they are capped over and look ok but are most definitely not safe at all... I have been there a couple days in a row checking things out...i will be very carefull on there tomorow... No offense to anybody. Please stay away from me... I want no extra weight near me because ice is very sketchy..... I will be wearing a life jacket tomorrow.. If i move around... So should you

Guys got out and fished. Good for them. They reported it was sketchy and found 3.5. I read it the way they reported. I didn't read into it. Just like here when there is solid ice all over this lake people start over fisherman keeping bass. We all have the same rights when we buy the license and we all make up our own minds. Maybe it's just that lake? Ice is coming so get ready

I didn't start fishing in the ice till later in my career. I am just 44 but for the 99% most ice guys are awesome friendly and willing to chat in the cold. Not saying anything was said wrong hope we all get on the good ice soon. Slabs and slobs and bulls. Dance in my head.

Clay I been icefishing for over 50 years. When I started I was called 😜....for going on the ice  sitting on a pop crate with a  road  flare  in it to keep our hands warm...I have lost to icefishing friends with bad judgement...and going alone...maybe that I preach safety....it was not easy for me....when I started  park rangers watched the ice and if was not safe  you did not get on it  in state parks...I hate reading someone lost there  life  icefishing  a sport I have love for over 50 years...all I want to don’t take chances .because when it brakes it is like a trap door...  be safe ...

I hope not, but I have a feeling this year is going to be just like last years.   Gets cold enough for a week or so to cap it and get a few inches then boom a week of rain and higher than average temps

I just bought a new "Bass O Matic" too. This ice fishing starting to get frustrating, either road trips and winter vacations or unload thousands of dollars worth of equipment and figure out another winter pastime. I'm sick of the yo yo winters. The only thing that saved last winter was fishing in the P.I.and I assume this year also. Look out jumbo's where coming for you. Get the boat ready road trip.lol

Father in law went last week to check the ice and he said he saw people but would not consider going yet as it was too thin.  As much as I like fishing not worth the risk in my opinion.  Prayers to the family.

My Rant;
Ive been on Ice Shanty for 14 years,in that time Ive seen too many stories of loosing a life through the ice. then you hear He died doing what he loved.
putting it in perspective you standing on what you say is safe ice Then suddenly you feel the ice under you crack. Your next sensation of the icy water surrounding you . within minutes your body starts to shut down.
Your limbs go numb, as your mind races to comprehend what has happened  in fractions of a second. you are in panic mode but your unable to free yourself and you start sinking below the ice.
If your lucky someone sees you and rush to help stopping short realizing the ice is unsafe. 911 is dispatched ,  vehicles arrive with probably volunteers, manning them. desperatly they try to reach you in turn risking their lives.  then the divers are called donning their colds water rescue suits. Then having the job to find a body because by now it,s inevitable a life has been lost.
and someone is given the job to find the family and deliver the tragic news.
Just put your self in any of these situations. How does it feel.
We all should learn from these tragic accidents. Studies and scientific evidence proves 4 inches is SAFE ICE. I know ill get repercussion for all of this saying mind my own business  or I know when ice is safe.
To many have dies in this sport thinking 3 inches is safe ice.
49 years since i got hooked on this sport,Ive driven two hours sat waiting for someone to show up if they don't i go back home
I nevr want my family to have a police officer or anyone else to tell them "he  died but he thought the ice was safe

If someone post up here I fished here or there and that ice was this or that early or late season that is a large portion of what this place is about accessing information from others so you can make an informed decision.  So you have guys out there fishing, who watched the lake freeze/set up and who where not out yesterday.  They never said it was safe only that they where out fishing here and there and this is what they found out which was accurate information.  They said there was poor ice in many areas with plenty of bad areas and some fishable areas.  So everyone wants to jump down their throats and bash them.  Perfect less and less people post up good information that others (new people to ice fishing or those from out of town) need to make educated decision on what best for them.  Simply because everyone wants to bash the next guy because they read into something that wasn't there or because they know best.

I live a few minutes away from the lake.  I used to go out every year and post up how the lake froze up when and where.  I do not do it any longer because people read into things and jump all over everyone else.  It will not be long and the new guys will not be posting up what they are finding out when they are out when you need the information the most.  All you will be left with is opinions.

Be Safe,

Snapper

I posted this on the  other thread you created.  No not at all it was not taken like that.  Good post brother, well said...  There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, ice safety tips or ice safety advice.  There are plenty of folks with or at different levels here that it all helps out.   What helps nothing or anyone is the child like senseless jabs that are totally wrong,  unnecessary, and inappropriate.  All they do is stop people for posting valuable information and fill this place with repeated senseless banter.

Well said Snapper.

Well forecast should get us safe ice as long as we don’t get snow this week (whichnks not in the forecast). I had a bad feeling about this past ice and tried to post everywhere I could. That feeling turned into the loss of a fellow fisherman. The crazy part is there were guys fishing Saturday in the exact location he went through after rapid deteriorating ice Sunday and Monday which was not really great to start with. Well here’s what we have coming starting tomorrow!

I did a drive by as well ice as far as the eye could see from the 528 bridge with plenty of water on top from all of  the rain there where scattered open areas.  Its been 32 since 100Pm. and has stopped snowing for a while.  Its pretty wet on top of that ice if we get snow and it lays it means all the water on top has froze and that would give us a few inches of ice.   I get it no snow is good but it at least means its cold enough to make snow and right now I'll take it.

there are notoriously stay open spots all over the lake no matter how cold it gets.springs enter and well up to the surface like the one at the mouth of 528/shannon/church.another is in MC straight across from the launch ramp, most guys know them and stay away till the ice really gets thick.snapper is the last guy to tell you its safe, his reports and every one elses need to be verified by YOU,they should be taken as general conditions and treated as such.thanks to those who check and report its time consuming and expensive to ride around lake and burn up a 1/2 a tank of gas checking the ice.
GOD BLESS you in the new year

Talked to the ranger today and the dead end at muddy.Talked to a fellow shanty member. The lake was open in places yesterday. It is capped today, except by the 528 bridge. Maybe 1.5" one step off shore. Not sure about the weekend but the ranger told me there was one nut on the ice by the cabins today. I guess he's trying to be the second casualty of the year. Use good judgment if you venture on the ice this weekend. Should be very fishable by next week. Mid week should be a go but I'm not telling you to go. That's entirely up to you. Looks good keep the snow away.

I just misplaced an old 8" mora auger in front of the McDanels boat launch an hour ago.  Someone already picked it up.  Let me know if you have seen it.

I have  it will be glad to get it to you.   I was torn between leaving it there thinking you might be back for it or taking it home and watching this site.  I thought if you were like me, I probably wouldn't have looked in the pickup bed when I got home so it might have been days before I missed it,  so I did the later.   I expect to go out tomorrow will you be around.

Oh wow, thanks!  I can be up that way around 2 PM tomorrow.  I'll PM you.

My kids wanted to leave, which I figured would happen if I took them.  I had to re-arrange the back of my Tahoe and completely left it on the ground under the truck and drove away.  We checked out 528 to see if anyone was there (probably like 20 shantys) then didn't realize we were missing it till half-way home.  Turned around and someone had already picked it up.

Have a brand new gas auger that I haven't even started yet and can't wait to try it out. Hope my old cabelas shanty kit is still in good shape. see you fellows out there.

Hit Bear Run yesterday afternoon. Less than ideal time to hit the ice and less than ideal location (a bit left of the boat launch).  The back of the cove was well-populated with several pop-ups. We were skunked on Minnie's and wax worms.  Maybe it would have been better if we had actually been over the old road bed?  Good ice everywhere we drilled - about 5 inches. All in all, still better than last year this time with warm weather and no ice!

Fishing muddy creek. 4-5” good clear ice. Fishing in 9’ adjacent to the main channel according to navionics. Dink gills on waxies and tungsten. About 10 guys here. Dudes with tip ups are targeting pike. Sounds like 1 pike and 1 largemouth. Need to get a power auger to be mobile...

Is no such thing as safe ice.  Was planning on it.  No need to be antsy and get on 3 to 4” when the cold wasnt going anywhere. Shooting for more or less Wednesday then won’t be back on till Sunday.  By then should build it an inch or two more with what’s being reported on there now with temps in the single digits all week... and if the calculations / observations / notes over the years hold up Wednesday is going to be an on fire day at the honey hole.  Then dip off till sat afternoon And Sunday depending on the snow.

Got out for the first time this year at Porter Cove with Eddie Spaghetti. Didn't get out till 3:00pm but caught a couple crappie and Eddie caught a couple bass and a crappie on a tip up. Squeezed that last dollar out of my 2017 fishing license. ;D Ice was a solid 5" clear and smooth with about 1 1/2" snow on top. This was out and to the right of the bout launch. Saw where there was lot of activity earlier and was told that the bite hit about 7:00am then died off shortly after then slow the rest of the day. Ice was making lots of noise when we were leaving. Be safe out there. 5" at Porter cove doesn't mean there is that much everywhere else on the lake. Probably a lot less in places.

New to the area, but not ice fishing (i moved down from Erie, PA and now live near Beaver Falls). I was thinking about heading to Arthur this weekend and from reading the post i think the ice will be safe. What does everybody fish for there? Pike, Bass and crappie? Probably going to porters cove or south shore. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Basically Bass is the biggest draw. Bass, channel cats, pike all can be caught on tip ups. Big shiners,or creek chubs, even fatheads can work on tip ups. Jigging for panfish, there tons of stunted blue gills, some nice crappie and even some decent perch.  Hope this helps you. Don't be afraid to use spoons ( forage minnow) for crappie. I feel sorry for you, leaving the Erie area is going to be a letdown. P.I. is the best fishing in Pa.

Rocket, the Captains comments are spot on. You'll see where the folks are/have been fishing. It's not real deep. The ice was 4-5" on Sunday, and should have grown since. Good luck. While you won't fill a bucket of fish, you should have fun. IMO Arthur is a nice "home lake".

I wouldn't call them slabs.lol.  Toads are more like it,although no ice in the bay last year we torched them in February and March in the boat. It's pretty sad throwing  10"-11" fish back all day keeping 12's and up. PB was a 15.5 toad that was 5 oz shy of the state record. We  caught many fish from 1.25 to 2 lbs plus. I don't know about the ice this year, plenty cold but friggin to much snow. Your basically fishing on frozen slush and snow.

there are many hot spots in eyesight of the CHURCH on LAKE ARTHUR! you can catch every species there points are magnets as are the bays.if you go enough you can pattern spots by observing where shanties are daily set up? the channel from shannon to m c is the crabbie super hwy you can follow the movement daily in and otta bay and creek.and when the fronts come they stack up pon brush that intersects the hwy

I have found a few. your gps will get you only 10 - 20 feet close to them. a gps will get even closer will the more satellite's it receives. test yours out in your yard and mark a stone and turn it off and go away from it and turn it on and hit the go-to button and see how close it gets u to the stone. so if you are on the ice you can see how many holes you need to drill to find it. I have given guys coordinates for a rock pile at 3 post and they come back and say that there is no rock pile there. best mine has gotten is 2 meters. (6 feet). love the camera it really lets you know if you are on them.

Looks like they got some good ones this year.  In the spring tournament 1st place had over 18 pounds and 2nd place had over 17 pounds in 10 fish.  The way the ice tournament is structured and not being able to use atvs it makes it tough to spread out and to get into different areas that are producing larger fish more consistently.  Either way its nice to see so many people out fishing the tournaments and being so successful.

Hey fellas, I am new to the site, had a guy I bought a flasher off of tell me about it the other week. I grew up fishing this lake, live right down the road. I moved away to Minnesota where I got into ice fishing and am now back home and trying to figure out the lake. I have some spots around the dam I fish in open water, and being used to Minnesota’s 3+ Feet of ice I am hesitant to go anywhere I don’t see others with the “thin” ice I am not used too. Anyone know if the dam area is safe? I was out the other day and didn’t see anyone over there so I decided not to chance it.

You have to watch around the dam the ice can really change thickness in a hurry.i would not go alone .and check that ice allot

"Cribs" is just referring to man-made structure placed at strategic spots in a lake.

Finally got on the ice today after a couple of years. Tried the upper 528 area. good 7" of ice with 4" of crusted snow. Nice bite around 3-3:30. Couple crappies and perch. Nothing after that. Beautiful day on the lake. Didn't need a shanty today. Man it was good to be out there.

They would it has to be untreated wood and etc.  if you email them and ask about building cribs to donate for LA they should tell you what the requirements / what they’re not allowed to contain are.

If anybody finds a GPS by the maples let me know please.  Mine popped off the lanyard that was tucked into my clothes and I never realized it wasn’t on there till I got home.  I’m going to try and run back over before work and see if I can find it but just in case someone picks it up in the mean time.

Id think everything will hold up just fine.

I to use 4 a pound fluorocarbon line.  It is heavy enough to land most non-target fish, does well in the brush and for the most part it holds up good on the edges of the ice hole.  I've used smaller diameter lines in the past for what I get out of the 4 pound vs what I received from the smaller diameter lines I've seen no reason to switch.

started out to Wilhelm at 2pm for the night bite but heard a funny noise coming from the back wheel or so I thought. was just coming up to the north shore exit so I took it and went to mcd launch. checked back but could not see anything. saw I guy fishing straight out from launch. so I decide heck mise well fishs here. I was looking on fishing hot spots and saw the deep basins toward the dam. I had the gps coord. on my gps so I hit the go-to button and off I went, for 100 yards and then the gps started to flash on and off and then turned off, so this went on for 1/2 hour until I reached the 25 foot mark or so I hoped. wrong 15 feet. this was after I drilled 20 holes. so I just though just fish here. well the bite (3:45pm) sucked! lookers but then just before dark my first fish of the season I caught a 6 inch striper. the ice was so clear (7 inchs) that I could see 3 or 4 more of them coming with him. then all of a sudden my fl8 started to loose my demon. had to turn the gain upto get it to show. then it started marking harder, kind of reminded me fishing Erie western basin that has a current. the demon is pushed out of the cone so you loose it. does this part of the lake have a current? hope so, don't know what else could go wrong! well it did just at dark I set the hook on what felt like a stone, them what every it was almost took the rod out of my hand and the drag started to scream, them nothing. hook just came out. 5 min later same thing but this time I had it on for about 20 seconds. well the night bite lasted to 8pm. left at 10pm with 5 keepers (9 to 11 inches) 9 total crappies. went I loaded up I noticed the door for the gas tank was cracked a 1/2 inch so I pushed it close and no noise on the way home. what a night!!!

Here is muskrat cove. No one is out here. Looks covered with a few wet spots but it’s flooded out almost to the top of the cement where the dock goes in. As the water level goes down it will like cause some problem areas if you are not careful. Looks like it’s weak 5 -10 feet off shore before you get to anything solid.

I stopped by porters and saw a few guys out there. Must have been you. Planed to grab my stuff and come out somewhere but when I got home from church I found my chest freezer stopped working and everything thawing out so the wife spent the day cooking and I spent the day eating. Lost some venison and fish but she was able to cook and freeze a lot of it to eat later. It was my worst fear come true. Glad we caught it in time and only lost a little.

Caught some perfect walleye meal sized perch on the edge of the main channel and a sandy flat about an hour before dark so I'm thinking I was on the right track unfortunatly i had to leave before prime time.

The ice looked awful dirty around the old 422 launch. Looked like a lot of run off from the warm/rain last week. Anyone been out there since? Wondering what the ice looked like.

Fished the Burton Road launch area on Monday. 8 -10 inches of ice from shoreline out. Lots of tip-ups from daybreak until 2:00 without a single flag. Couldn't even get a dink to take a look.

Fished upper 528 yesterday from 10:00am til 3:00pm. Was surprised at the constant bite on the jigging rods for that time of day. Mostly small but consistant. Not one bite on tip ups with minnows and shiners but a few people around me pulled in a couple northerns on tip ups. Never saw so many people on the ice. Especially the Shannon finger. What a beautiful day an the hard water. 4" of crusty snow on top of 10" of ice.

I rarely say locations and there’s plenty of reason behind it and I haven’t for a few years now. it does take some skills to run a jig, read what’s going on, and slay the slabs consistently... but fished some untouched honey hole areas today ice was still holding up fine.   Iced a bunch of dink gills with a few keeper gills. 2 dink perch. Quite a few dink crappy with a few keepers in the mix, and a  17” largemouth.  On plastics and forage minnow.

Out here now. Still ok. Some holes opening. Stay away from any inlets and should be ok. One more rain without a freeze and you won’t see me out again.

Just ran into a soft spot of only 4”. Be careful if your headed out. It was enough to send me walking back to the car. I am by myself and didn’t need to chance it. The rest was all over 6 of good ice with white ice on top. Just stay away from inlets as I am sure they are getting soft.

Be safe.

I don’t think it looks too bad yet. It looks like high temps during the day but plenty of below freezing nights over the next month. As long as we hold some ice this week I think we will be back out there some more this season. It will all depend on the rain and how much of it. 12 of the next 15 days go below freezing at night and some down into the teens once we get into February with another cold snap.

Fish were actively feeding until about 9. Well ...., we didn't actually get to McDaniels launch until about 2pm or shortly after . All in all , our new shelter and daughters maiden voyage turned out really well . We didn't catch anything , but was still a nice time out together and of course my daughters pet rabbit . On that subject , I would like to apologise to whoever my daughter and the rabbit disturbed . I was in the shelter fishing and I guess the rabbit took off over to someone in a Flipover Clam shelter and my daughter had to run up to get him . May have startled the gentleman . The only mishap we had was me not reading WARNINGS on toe warmers of all things . I used a couple , but instead of putting them in my boots , I was lazy and just put them on my shins on the outside of a pair of thin wool socks . HOLLY MOLLY ! ! ! I could tell they felt hotter than normal and took them off when we got back to the truck . I could still feel an uncomfortable feeling where they were . When I got home and took my socks off I had 2 50¢ size blisters on my shins ! ! I'm not a overly sensitive type person , so that's not a issue . When it says PLACE ON OUTSIDE OF SOCKS they're serious ! Other than that , I can't wait to get back out again .

Nice fish Tony !  Thanks , we really like the new shelter .Yes Sir . She was content with her phone and bunny & books . We just need to apologise to whoever was in the shelter that her rabbit took off to visit . She ran up to fetch him back and probably startled the poor guy in the shelter . LOL !  Now that you can identify our shelter , please feel free to stop by and visit if you see us out on the lake . We didn't catch anything , but still had great father/ daughter time . I was in to much of a hurry to start fishing . I need to allow the fish finder to do it's job and find good structure before I start drilling holes , like I used to back years ago . One thing I did find out about having a heated shelter , you really need the crampons for your boots once the ice starts melting inside . It got kinda slick in there after a couple hours . Oh , and foam rubber carpet padding soaks up the water melting from the heater . I was thinking about one of those anti-fatigue mats you put in front of the kitchen sink area . Don't know if they also soak up water though ? I know guys here say to use those foam puzzle pieces , but I'm not sure how slick they may be on the ice . When I take my handicap buddy out , I need to consider all possible mishaps . Indoor / outdoor carpet maybe ?

I'm glad you guys were entertained . LOL ! Rabbit hole .... good one ! I was just worried she would bother someone when she had to chase him down . Thanks for having a good sense of humor . She actually told me some guys were laughing at her chasing him down . HTH , I'm glad somebody caught fish . I was showing some on the finder , but no biters . Even if they did , it better be walleye , big perch or crappie . I don't care for bass or bluegill . Anyone know of decent walleye holdings ? The only place I got into some real nice ones long ago was just off the roadbed off Nealy's Point . I even drilled a couple holes for a newbie that only brought a crowbar for holes . As they say , beginners luck , he pulled a 25 inch walleye out of the hole 15 minutes later . Needless to say , he was hooked ! Pun intended . LOL ! Have a good one guys and tight lines to you all .

Went in at Zion church, walked down the right side, then walked across down the other side and ended up at the point accross from chuch and 528 launch. Drilled a ton of holes, but ended up catching about 30 fish, a mix of perch, gills, and crappie, mostly dinks, biggest was a 10.5 gill. Definitely not an easy day of fishing, 7-12ft seemed to be our sweet spot, pink jigs were the hot lure, tipped with maki plastics, or maggots.

I left a rod holder to the right and along the left shore in the beginning of the back cove.  If you grab it enjoy it saved me losing some poles.  Nice little spot off that point to gets to 20 feet quick.

Got into the gils and crappie again tonight. Set up a few tip ups for pike with some XL shinners on them for fun and then jigged for crappie. Hooked into something big early, the drag was froze up and I lost it at the hole despite my efforts with no drag, never did know what it was but it was big for my crappie rod. Dad showed up and brought some luck with him. Ended up with over 40 fish between him and I the last hour of light and more than a dozen of them being keepers with a few slab crappies. At dark we started to pack up and noticed one of the tip ups going off... got to it and had the biggest crappie of the year engolf a 7” shinner! It even ran almost 30 yards of line out, thought for sure it was a bass or pike till I pulled a huge crappie thru the hole.

Best part of ice fishing is never knowing what is on the other end till you pull it thru that little hole, and everything looks bigger as it comes thru an 8” hole.

Just Shy of 15”. No record but compared to the rest we have been catching this year it was big for us. My dad took a picture but didn’t have the flash on. I dont want to sound like “that guy” but the only proof I have is the other two guys fishing there tonight that saw it.

Just joined here so I could start posting on this thread...lol

We fished Saturday like 11-430 off McDaniels (Was in the Frabill Flip) caught bunch of blue gill and one crappie early in the 15ft of water around crib area east of the launch...we got bored with them and moved into the deeper water around 20ft caught handful of Perch like 7-11in (we kept a few) and one more small crappie...All the perch were puking up little shad...Lota lookers coming in as well on the Vexilar...

We caught every perch on 1/32 with plastics...

Will be out again this week...we have been looking for the bigger slab crappies, thinking about fishing shallower this week...Seems like most guys I talk to on other lakes are doing better in less than 10ft....i dunno
