Great way to get the Malocchio on me... now going to drop some olive oil in a bowl of water to see if I’m cursed.

Don't kid yourself ... If you are walking on ice you are taking a risk , being prepared is what counts ....

I fell in a few years ago. There were a bunch of guys out on a local spot foot tracks everywhere and I was ignorant and stepped off dock where there were other tracks and before I knew I was over my head. I shot out like a rocket ship!! Lucky for me had a change of clothes and changed and found new way in the ice. Scary a little bit thankfully I had the doc to grab onto to hoist myself back up!! I will say my butthole puckers a little the first few steps on the ice ever year.

I'm a big old boy. I don't take chances. When I get the pucker factor I don't go out. Late in the season ice was brittle on the shore line but 12 inches about five foot from shore. Fished until noon came off the ice and some nice person took the board we were using to get on the ice. Only way off was to get wet. Lucky it was a shallow bay and only got wet up to my knee.

Other than going through at about knee depth near the shore edge about 10 years ago I can't say that I have which of course is a good thing but I'm always prepared! I take it pretty serious to take every precaution, have my safety gear and equipment and use a ton of common sense. Great posts here and on the one of folks who have fallen through which serves as great reminders and safety tips I have never even thought of..

Can't say the thread title applies to me...four wheeler, shanty, whole kit-n-kaboodle went in four years ago, mile offshore, 12 degrees, first (and only one) out there . Had my kids' babysitter's 17 year old son on the back of the wheeler and it was his second time ice fishing...he still goes with me!
We're very lucky. Recovered everything! We settled on a gas hole on Oneida Lake in Central New York. I have fished Oneida for about 35 years but it just goes to show you that you have to respect Mother Nature.

So far, so good after approx. 18 years. Try to be as safe as I can and as prepared as I can. Been on some sketchy ice before, but always on water I know and am comfortable with, and always with a buddy and lots of precautions. Now I only hit good, safe (relatively speaking) ice

Should I reply to this thread if I still plan on getting one more trip in this season? You get the drift always play it safe. I like to be in the water but usually only the ocean/swimming pool so I try to stay on top. Use that spud bar folks...it'll keep your stuff dry!

nope, never went through. I thought I did once but it was ice on top of a foot of water on top of a foot of ice. Scared the berjeebers outta me! I wear a striker ice suit, got spikes and a spud. On top of that, if it looks wrong, I don't go on.

Does post-holing to your shin in your own hole count?
DNR officer was a buddy of mine and scared the be-jesus out of me when he came to check my license. I fell off my bucket and into my hole.

I haven't yet, but I usually wait till someone else has been fishing for about a week with new ice then I go out. And once the ice starts melting and there is about 5-6 inches then I call it, that's when you start getting sketchy ice in my opinion. Always wear my striker bibs and have ice picks.

picks, spud bar, PFD, and rope. the pfd stays in the sled after the ice hits about 8 inches as an emergency throw device.
that said, i've never fallen through. i've gotten uncomfortable close though, and that's put enough caution in me for at least the next 10 years or so.

Ice fished for over 20 years.
Never went in above my boots.
*knocks on wood
Spud or pop holes on your way out. Have a rescue rope ready and a plan. Both are equally important.
Walk if there is a previous trail, look at holes on your way out. Spread out if your walking in a group, common sense stuff...
