They must have changed the rules. I had a dec officer tell one of my friends he couldn’t use a gaff in ny fresh waters.  And it was during ice season. He said mostly because you can injure an under sized fish your not going to keep.

Here it is:
Use or possession of gaffs or gaff hooks is prohibited when fishing in freshwater, including the Hudson River upstream of the Tappan Zee Bridge, except when ice fishing.

Lol.

We had a DEC officer 2 weeks ago on a reservoir in Putnam county have to check Regs on a Gaff. He was trying to say it was illegal to use, but after going back to his truck to read Regulations he came back and apologized.

There isn't anything wrong with using a gaff most people that are using them are keeping the fish they are catching. I always keep one in my sled just in case I need it I rarely ever actually use it though.

Yeah probably the same one that told me it was illegal. Maybe they just say it because it’s poor sportsmanship. It’s pretty unethical to potentially kill a fish before you can measure it. Even if you kill it it’s got to go back in the water. If you keep it it’s a potential ticket.

"Poor sportsmanship" if you don't know a fish is legal before you stick it with a gaff you have no rights being on the lake. Haven't stuck a fish with a gaff in a lot of years but they sure do work good for pictures when my daughter don't like touching fish.

No wonder you don't know the laws you can't see, there's only 1 gaff in that picture.

Ignore the troll.  Some posts ago he couldn't even figure out where Lake George regulations were in the guide book.  I wouldn't take anything he says seriously.

I’m not sure you can read ,  I said I didn’t have a book . Not that I couldn’t find it in the book. And online it said to look in the book for the lake George regulations. It looks like a gaff with a short handle in her right hand. You also said you use “ they work good “ referring to more then one. My bad...

I like using grips because I release most trout and pike I catch. I was glad a buddy had a gaff handy when we finally got a look at this fish after fighting it for half of the dang day. Poor kid started the day jigging trout. The first hour was a bust, but we were marking perch. My kid nor I could resist so we got the perch rods out and got to work on them. Of course, we got 15 minutes deep and this trout wanted to play with a little tungsten on an ultralight and 3lb line. He told me he wanted to mount the fish and that gaff helped ensure the fish got to the taxidermist.
For the first time in my life I cut a 2nd hole for a fish and spudded the center out. I'm kind of shocked how slick it worked. The fish certainly would have fit through my 7" holes, but I'm not sure how much of a chance we really stood. So proud of that kid today I was choking on the ride back in with him. A day and battle that I wish had no end.
She measured 31" 9.6lbs. Hate to take her out of the pond fellas, but the kid wants her on his wall. I hope he plans on doing some mowing this summer.  ;D

The boy already has some local lore?!?!
We jigged perch this past Saturday. Someone is messing with you about him landing 27 lake trout.
We only get those kind of numbers when we're fishing perch. We'll call it a legit 9 trout the Saturday before. In order to count the one he handed off to his big brother.  ;D
