Always use a 6" nils and last year I learned a new trick for me from a bass masters champion. He would stick the pole in the hole and reel almost to the eyelet. Works great for thick ice @)

SnowIt, fished the last few days out of Vets and have found the perch bight tough to non existent, we traveled quite a lot and tried water depth 50-20. The fish are there but were not in the mood. We switched over to lakers and had a blast. Landed 15-20 fish. I would suggest moving in to 25'-40' water depth. Most of the lakers we caught were over the perch beds and all were landed using jigs. No tip ups.

New to jigging for lakers. What type of jigs are best / working? Thanks.

Just about any jig in your tackle box will work if the lakers are there and active.  White is our go to color tho

I'm currently on the north side of the sagamore in between sagamore and crown island.    So far no bites

Today for me off of Pilot Knob was very tough,, only marked a couple of fish.  Believe most of the lakers have moved shallow... Wednesday fished by Phelps on the shallow side the smelt and perch were stacked and the lakers were in there feeding. All the food is starting to move shallow and the big boys are following.

there are some nice laker spots near phelps over there. I have found in March when the smelt start moving looking for creek mouth's, the lakers over there have spots they come through all day.

We fished Friday.

Conditions were close to perfect  ....  mostly glare ice and no slush.

Took a 2nd time jigger out ....  a month or so we went and he connected with a couple in the shanty with me helping but he couldn't connect completely on his own which killed him

He did it 8 times or so yesterday and he said it was one of his best days of fishing ever  ;D

I was shocked ...... had fish on the screen from the very first drop  ;D

If you remember where you and Jeff and i walked that one day we were in that general area and had way more fish action than i anticipated.

We even ran 5 tipups ....  i can't believe that with all of the fish on the screen and all that we got on the jigs that we didn't get a single fish on tipups! ::)

I see alot of numbers put up on the jig stick but I believe the biggest lakers are caught on tip ups year in and year out.  I got into some friday, they are on the perch grounds heavy right now.

Nice laker.. I believe you always have a shot at a bigger fish on a tipup, any species except bluegill.

We slammed the lakers this weekend.  Very good size too, we put quite a few over 25" on the ice.  Schools of 6+ on the screen at times.    Perch bit well the little time we bothered with them.   Should be 2 to 3 more weekends left - at least

Wow bigredonice I was just gonna ask if this weekend was gonna be ok lol.  Thank God, I have not been able to get out in about a month since I hurt my knee.  Was really hoping to get out there at least one more time, but more than that would be amazing!  Just worried about the edges.

Thought I seen the can am cruise by sat afternoon heading up to the lot.
Thought about just driving the truck out there ( others did ) .
The ice / shore was in fine shape.
Just watch out for growing craters ( previous holes ) and the beach access where wheelers/ utv and vehicles have been getting on. Under the guardrail will be good for awhile yet
