ITs that time of year again might have to go and pop some in to see  how she's starting to flow.

Thanks for starting and continuing this thread!  I decided to try tapping a few trees around the house this year.  Never done it before, no idea what I'm doing.  Stuck 3 taps in Sunday and Monday just to test it out.  Not much happened Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday, but I checked last night and was able to collect my first gallon.  Last night I stumbled upon this and spent a good portion of the evening reading through all 25 pages of this thread.  Lots of my questions were answered, and some that I wouldn't have even known to ask.  In the end, I might only get enough to cover a couple of pancakes, but still, there's something satisfying about "growing your own"...

Awesome Keychain - good luck!  I put a half dozen more taps in this morning and sap was coming in at a pretty good clip.  First day that it's really run for me so far.  Hopefully have the rest in this weekend.

Have they been in long?  For whatever reason, some trees seem to go on a different schedule.  I'd hang with them awhile longer and see what happens.

IceDrinka  My nephew has a Qt of finished product.  He says he has 30 gallons sap ready for a second boil.  I have been down in Florida just got back so maybe I'll get on board and try my luck..

In my experience, you know, being an expert and all after setting out three whole taps :)

I put two taps in the same tree.  First one was dry, second one on the other side of the tree was practically gushing out when I drilled.  The "dry" one did start producing a bit, but not even a third of the amount as the other.  Seems like the first one must have missed the vein.  So I'd say the occasional dud is bound to happen...

Alright guy's, my first time ever doing anything like this (it's fun...for sure), but I have a question. Time is limited, and I can't boil down my sap
right away, so I have started to store it in the fridge, until I get enough to boil down. Is this OK to do?

Yeah, temp drop did seem to slow things down, didn't it?  I decided to do my first trial run Sunday with 2 gallons, just to see how it would come out.  Ended up with about 3 oz and it tastes great.  Pretty happy with the results for my first time...

Yea the wind is no help to running either.....need wind to stop and temps to go back up.  We have boiled twice so far (120 gallons) sap that is we have about 2.5 gal of syrup!!!!!!

Going to tap next week with the new buisness boiling should be alot easier.  My grill and exhaust fan should make for a nice finish area.  I can set pots overnight too and keep it low and slow.

Tapped 11 trees, got about 6 gals sap this weekend.  Should be a good week for sap run down here. Here's a picture of my set up for now.

I was wondering were my kerosene container got off to!  ;D(j/k)  I like that setup.  Me and the youngest sap hauler set out 10 last night, according to Westerly, we haven't missed much yet. @)  Hoping to have to boil by Sunday.
