First timer here.  Tapped 8 big maples, got about 100 gallons of sap since mid march.  Boiling right now  (some over wood and some over propane turkey fryer).

This is my new after ice fishin hobby!

Glad to hear you had a good year Iceman!!  100 gallons of sap will give you plenty of Syrup for the family.  But, like GameFisher stated, you've always got more friends during the maple season.....  @)

Thanks for your comments Eric - Coming from you, that means a lot!!  Propane is definately more expensive then wood, but I like seeing sap boil 30 minutes after turning it on and continuing to boil for the entire day.  Plus, my parents have a hard time handling a wood burner.

Harry - As you know, you've always got a place at my campfire.  Just let me know when you're coming and we'll make it a grand weekend.

Can you let me know if you find anything like this, Im doing a project for school, in which im making maple syrup and im trying to find an easy way to boil it. I was going to use a turkey fryer but people said there wasnt enough surface area.

turkey fryers work but it takes a long time. 10 hours to do 30 gallons of sap to finished produce +/-.  ive been told not to use aluminum pots for long boils

I would imagine the sap is running right now!

the weather is weird this year and with the temps in the 40s is it still too early to tap, even if its for a few days. ???

Cut the arm off a maple that was hangin over the driveway two days ago and the sap ran both yesterday and today. The weather report says frigid this weekend, but I'm probly gonna punch holes in some trees first of next week.

Hmmmm. I started this thread four years ago.......got some awfully good milage out of it. Just found a handfull of taps out on the porch. Think I might tap a tree or two here in the yard in the next day or so.....just enough to make a pint or two....

I still have over a gallon myself and since someone stole my sap stove out of my camp I'll be downsizing a bit this year and going propane. :'(
