Treble or single hook?
« on: Dec 07, 2018, 02:03 PM »
Hey guys,  How many of you guys switch out your treble hooks for a single hook on your metal baits or spoons. (Kastmasters, Buckshots etc..)  Mainly for pan fish and trout, tipped with a bait like waxies, meal worms, piece of crawler or minnow head. Heard people do it, I never have. Wonder if its worth the hassle.

We have to do it in NH, can't use live bait with more than one hook point per line. I'd probably swap to singles anyways though, always a bummer trying to get a treble out of a gills mouth when they have all 3 points stuck and your fingers are cold...

No, but I upgrade the trebles to better quality red gammies and replace them often as needed as they bend/dull.

Swedish pimples come with a single hook and trebles for you to choose...I’ve never used the single.

For targeting bass I upsize the trebles, too. Just not too big to mess up the action

Switch from treble to single hook. Like it was said, getting a treble out of a gill or perch can be a pain. I would even go to a drop chain as well. But that's just me. ;D

Single, for the fish it's better, for me its quicker for release.

I have found a few lures that when I switched, from treble to single, the action was affected.

definitely switch ones you use for smaller species of fish to a single hook. i always switch mine to the haley dropper chains with the beaded hooks. on a active bite a lot of the times you don't even need bait on the hook with the beads

Those are some good points.  For me, if I'm targeting sunfish, I'm not using anything with a treble anyway.  Mostly tugstens or smaller jigs with single hooks already.

If I'm targeting perch, anything goes.  Tungsten, kasty's, jigging raps...etc.  Quick release isn't really needed, so the trebles aren't an issue.  I would like to try some dropper chains with single hooks this year for perch.  I got some last season and haven't had the chance yet - never had the need.   ;D

As for Kasty's or spoons with trebles for trout --  I've never switched out the trebles for singles.

I like singles for the simple fact I can handle taking them out with gloves on 99% of the time.

When I jig a pimple with a treble it always finds its' way to hooking the line and if I've had a few adult beverages I don't notice. I usually swap them for singles. The last few pimples I've purchased have not had the single hooks with them... same price though. :(
It must be something in the water.

I just keep the original treble on jigs and spoons. I'm afraid if I don't, the action may be affected. I rarely, if ever have a fish swallow a hook on a jig. I switched years ago from trebles to singles on tipups. I still catch fish. When they swallow the hook, it's much easier to get out.

Trebles (size dependent on species) for big fish...singles for smelt. Don't use spoons and the like for other pannies.

Ive tried all sorts of different combinations, always back to just a basic 1/16 or 1/8 spoon with a #10 or #12 treble for panfish. Load it FULL of spikes, 6-12.
