Big Saint Germain Lake
« on: Jan 08, 2018, 07:30 PM »
Any of you fish this body of water? Heading there end of February with 12 guys. Wondering if any good places to eat around the lake. And if anyone has had success fishing this lake. Thanks Bearlake

Fibbers resort right on Big St. owned by local fishing guide Rob Manthei. Good food and a good source of info of the lake

x2 on Fibbers. Great place and great folks! Lots of fine eating and drinking places in town too.

With 12 guys you should be able to pin point some fish for sure. X marks about where Fibbers is. I circled a few spots I've done well on for pike/walleye.

Thanks. We rented a house in the south east corner of the lake. That saddle there to the west of what you marked caught my eye. 5 to 30 foot drop in 60 yards guessing. To the east of there where you marked is that a big shallow weed bed?  Ever get big northern there?

The east end is the weediest I've seen on Big St. We usually pound it hard for Musky, but it's good for Northerns as well.

Mighty generous 52! I've been on Big St. 3 times on the ice:

1. Fawn Bay - 26" walleye and a pile of nice perch.

2. Big Island South Central - lots of tiny walleyes.

3. West side off weedlines and cribs - middlin' pike.

Got a cousin with access on Little St. so I get close but he prefers other water. Big St. has lots of "potential" though.

Everyone is getting pumped up to go. This is our tenth year going kind of a family reunion all brothers and cousins. Last year we hit north twin lake and did alright on walleye but hit one of the artic vortex weekends put a damper on motivation to hit the ice when the bottle bass were hitting.  ;D Thanks for all the info. Is the lake fairly clear?

I fish Big St Germain multiple times a year and the locations 52 marked are spot on!

I'd also recommend Fibbers on the north end of the lake for good grub and great fishing info. I've had the pleasure of fishing with Rob Manthie and he really knows his business. If you want to get the most out of the trip you may want to have each guy in your group kick in a few bucks and have Rob set you up.

Good luck! Be sure to leave a couple fish left in the lake for the rest of us. :-)

Anyone know snow depth? ATVs traveling ok? Or snowmobile only?

Can't speak directly to Big St. but just returned from Plum (same a little north in the same general area). Zero slush, 18 - 20" of ice, maybe 8" of snow on top. We drove trucks on and ATV/sled travel was easy.

Do you guys know if anyone rents hard side ice shacks on this lake? Nice to have a base camp with heat.

You looking for a sleeper deal? Good luck with that, very difficult to find in this state for some reason. How long? Day, weekend, long weekend?

There is an area guide that has a wheelhouse he moves around. Try Doug Will (715) 891-0242 though he's likely booked, might be able to steer you.

Thanks much. I did find two hard side ice shacks with a plowed road to them from a private party supposed good crappie spot. $150 bucks for both for 3 days seems like a great deal. Time will tell we can also move them if we want. If they are decent i will share the info with you if you are interested. Latter bearlake

Thanks bearlake16, good stuff to know. I don't know why WI doesn't offer more of that like MN does.
