Looking for new gear releases for this winter.

I'm curious as well. I'm looking for a lithium shuttle for my Helix 7 G2. I wonder if Humminbird is coming out with one this year, or if Marcum is coming out with a new improved version.

I'm looking for some too- I'm down to about 8-10 rods and a similar # of reels. I'm starting to panic! ;D

As far as I have heard and seen, bird isnt coming out with anything new so to speak for hardwater. Marcum on the other hand......yes, new stuff coming. Vex is coming out with a glo-ring (think glow cups). Should retail for like $30-35.

ICAST is this week... some ice fishing items have popped up from time to time ….August is the usual time I see items start getting some write ups and retailers have "back order " items for the new season .

Here you go.  Only 97 clicks away from seeing all of the new ICast 2018 stuff, plus another 10 or so to click away ads.  Some cool stuff and big $$$, but nothing exclusively for ice fishing. :(

So far all I've seen on facebook is 2 new cameras.  One is 1080p with an HDMI output.

Anybody know if the shappell fx100i will be available this year?im going insulated flip over this season and if price is right it will be the fx100i.

those denali rods might be interesting - their in the walleye series. Likely graphite blanks, evolve handles, halfway decent guides. Denali is pretty well respected for a great rod at a decent price. They have denali branded ice reels as well

i too am wondering if shappells insulated flips will be available

I was told by customer support at Eagle Claw that the Shappell FX100i would be available next season back in January, so I assume that means this coming season.  I'm guessing the msrp will be around $329.

I just put together my new EVO 1it yesterday and am not thrilled with it to say the least.  You HAVE to use the provided ice anchors with the front hub to keep it from collapsing inward towards you at the bottom and the entire seat structure/frame is made of heavy square steel tubing.  If they had used aluminum, they could've cut 10-15 lbs. of weight at least.  I may still end up with the Shappell after all.  I bought the EVO cheap enough that I can probably unload it locally and still make some cash on the deal.  It's nice and roomy inside, but I still kinda want a shelter I can just take a seat on and pull the roof over my head.  Simple & quick.  The EVO involves unpacking, pulling two hubs out and ice anchoring AT LEAST three locations on the skirt, one in the back and two in the front just to get it set up and stable.  They actually provide six ice anchors total and the skirt has six holes to accommodate them.  I'd rather be fishing than screwing around with ice anchors(pun intended).

Kinda off topic, but in regards to Humminbird, does anyone know how often their update they map chips? I want to buy the Smart Strike MN chip, which is currently on version 3. I don't wanna spend the money and then a couple months later version 4 is released.

after i did my review of the shappell fx100i here i was contacted by a fellow member that is their marketing manager and he mentioned it would be available this fall and would be in their fall 2018 catalog. mine was marked 350$ but there were only 100 made at that time.
it does frost up inside as high as the tub because of the slits in the tent for it to be able to fold back, if your heating.

a dnr officer was checking it out one night and wants one bad. thinking they will get sold out fast and i wouldn't wait for a sale to pick one up or you might not have one for a while.

I bought some heavy duty stick on velcro for my fx 200 to seal that area up better, worked out pretty well

interesting. do you recall brand or specs of the velcro? can you post some pics of it?
eagle claw is supposed to be making improvements to their shelters and this might be some thing they could use too.
since the old manufacturing contract is either over or nearly over, they plan to revamp their line up. they mentioned the dog legs that i asked them to try to use also. this brings and holds the fabric from the tub to the front to the ice closer and will help with side winds. it should look like like the letter J and bolt to the single hinge bolt on each side and then bolt to the side of the bottom bar and then velcro straps hold it to the dog legs.

No pictures on my phone and I'm not sure what brand of velcro I got,it was in 8X10 sheets ,i stuck it on the bottom corner flap and brought that part to the side of the tub, 2X 8 strip in each corner

stepping up to the digital world would be good for competitive pricing and options for end users.

The combo units with the GPS capabilities along with the lake contour maps put out by other brands are making a pretty big step into the ice fishing world, especially with younger users.  I prefer to fish with a flasher unit and I'm definitely a Vex fan, but last year I also hauled a Garmin unit with me because of the GPS and lake map features.

DN, thanks for sharing!  Pretty interesting concepts on both.  I like the offset door on the Eskimo, I'm assuming you'd have to anochor the two hubs that are connected to the door piece?  That way they stay separated so that the door piece doesn't get smooshed together, if that makes sense?

And I wonder if the Clam floor attaches somehow?  Looks like Polar Bird was on to something after all...

Can't wait to hear reviews of the new gear once it gets put into action!

As already stated they haven't made the leap to digital, gps, ect while everyone else has. They are going to slowly become the equivalent of the flip phone if they don't do anything new.

I disagree.. vexilar makes good reliable ice fishing flashers.gps and all the other features drive prices too high on other brand units.after all we are just pulling a fish thru a hole in the ice.how much tech is needed for that.its reliability im after not a bunch of stuff added that is not needed.jmo.i would like the panoptix for ice and boat but i cant justify the price just to catch fish.

It would be different if the digital units really “did” something that was above and beyond what the vex does.

Sure an LX 7 allows a person to customize the display which is just different ways of showing the sonar reading. The “graph” shows some history which the vex doesn’t.....but any graph fish finder does that.

GPS/lake maps on my phone for cheap....why do I need it on my sonar.....

Unless prices come down, I doubt to many people care to spend $1000 on a sonar to ice fish.

I’m with you on this. My Vex flasher good enough for me. I downloaded the Navionics app on my phone for $19.99/yr. Some of those fancy Marcums are nice but they are expensive and from the people I know who have them not nearly as reliable.

I agree...if you want digital, go digital. No knock against anybody that goes that way, if it works better for you than by all means use it to your advantage. I cannot afford to ugrade every year and I am happy with what I have. If you need the latest and greatest every year than more power to you, nothing wrong with that either!

Good luck to anyone trying to use livescope on the ice this year....you will need a alot of power and a pretty big case to keep it all together. Not to mention the weight..... Not sure it is there just yet to use on the ice.

They will need to get rid of the 4# black box that comes with the system and integrate it into the head units themselves. Also should figure out the power draw before it will ever end up in a ice bundle. Not knocking but that is a huge limitation for anyone who hole hops. You would be lucky to get 4-5 with a car battery on the ice. These next few years will be interesting with all the changes and power shifts within the fishing industry and technology advancing like it is, with some but not all companies.

Oh don’t get me wrong things like the new panoptix are really interesting, and might be worth the upgrade....we will see. However, IMO most of the digital units aren’t really game changing vs a vex currently. They do the basic reading below you and maybe bring gps maps with it. And display the same readings in a few different ways. Something like a panoptix being able to show a person where fish are located off to the side or where the school of Perch are going would be a game changer. It would vastly help you find the fish. I have no issue going digital, but until there is a really new game changing feature I don’t feel I’m missing anything.

I mean the panoptix showing the fish and tree is cool......but when I drop a camera I can see that and watch my bait.....can the panoptix do that with your bait.....I don’t know. It will be neat to see if it works like a guy hopes.

Yes, you can do that with panoptix. The livescope is not suitable for ice usage currently unless you're in a wheelhouse imo. The black box it requires is 4# by itself, not to mention power consumption and the size of the ducer itself. I picked up a ps22 this spring and have gotten some time in with it on my kayak and think it's going to be absolutely incredible on the ice, but we'll see!

That panoptix will be reduced in size and weight faster than we might think - it is pretty that garmin is hungry for market-share with the moves theyve made in the last couple of years.

They can start with switching out the battery in their ice bundle to a lithium one. The current factory battery is a 12aH SLA beast! They already refined the ice bundle for this year by switching out the head unit from the Echomap Chirp 73cv to the Echomap Plus Chirp 73cv (which has a touchscreen).

Looks like Up North Sports had to pull back the new 2019 side entry Otter flips.  You can still see them if you click on the link above and then just change the model name in the url address, but if you just go to UNS directly and look for Otter flip shanties, they've been hidden from view.  Probably got into hot water with Otter for advertising them for sale too soon...before Otter had time to make their big product change announcement themselves. lol

What does this mean to us you ask?  Well, it means that all of the vendors who still have inventory of last years Otter shacks will now be clearancing them even sooner this year.  No one will want to try and sell last year's Otters alongside this year's new side entry models.  We will soon have some great sale prices on last year's Otters popping up.  In consecutive years when models don't change much, it's not as big of a deal, but when a major change is made, the previous years models become unsaleable fast.  Think automobiles in years when a major makeover takes place with a particular model.  The old model (even if brand new) instantly get branded "old style."

I will be scouting out the vendors that still have last year's models in stock and will keep a close eye on them for clearance sales.  This should be a great opportunity to pick up an Otter flip at a big discount.

i saw the 900$ price and that alone turned me off. but, i kept looking at the specs and it is too heavy for hand pulling anyway.

Yeah, I've watching as well. I'm really hoping to find a discounted Hideout, but it doesn't look like those have any new features this year, at least not that I could find.

I wonder how well the touchscreen works in cold temps...not like 38* walleye fishermen temps, I mean like -30* lol

yeah eskimos steel chair is ridiculously heavy..the inferno wide one shelter is heavy for its size.im no going eskimo brand.that evo looks like too much set up.

Over the winter there was a thread where lightening the EVOs was discussed. If I remember correctly you can dump a ton of weight out of them and it’s not hard to do at all.

being this is about new ice fishing gear, not old tech. here is "new" sonar gear called garmin panoptix livescope. looks like a camera, but it's sonar.

New??

Panoptix is not that new..  I was the one who put it up last year and got crusified by every one saying humming bird was better cause it was made in usa.. just cause it was garmin imported  and humming bird was usa made.. lol's as you can see why I was excited about the new technology as you are... as you can see the great need for this type of technology..

Not really a new product but a recommendation for okuma.  Bought a reel from them this spring and somehow busted the line clip off,  they sent a new spool zero questions asked.

Yep Okuma makes some pretty solid products....Okuma coldwater line counters are great for open water walleye fishing.

Just a quick comment on the Panoptix technology. Been using on my boat for three years now. On the ice for two years. A fishing friend of mine came up with this analogy. Searching for something in my garage in the dark. Would I use a flashlight or turn the overhead lights on ? Yes the difference is that great.

Have not used the new Livescope yet. More than likely I will not. Why ? Expense for one thing. Completely satisfied with present set up is the other reason. Running a GPSMAP 1040 XS with PS 30 and PS 21 on the boat. Ice fishing rig is 92 Echomap Chirp with the PS 22.

All people that have fished with me on the ice or on the boat. Were convinced they needed what I got. Seeing them in action convinces any doubters.

I disagree.. vexilar makes good reliable ice fishing flashers.gps and all the other features drive prices too high on other brand units.after all we are just pulling a fish thru a hole in the ice.how much tech is needed for that.its reliability im after not a bunch of stuff added that is not needed.jmo.i would like the panoptix for ice and boat but i cant justify the price just to catch fish.

pfff have you seen the rest of the fishing world and how fast its moved?  you know the reason nobody has a flasher on the dash of their boat anymore?  because the technology is so much better.   there were plenty of people who guffawed at digital readout fish finders saying "why are these necessary?! my flasher is perfect!" back in the 80's.

vexilar can only hang its hat on reliability.  thats not going to keep them relevant.  for the first time in a while, out on some busy lakes, i saw way more digital units than i thought i would.   mechanical flashers are going the way of the dodo.  they still work and there will still be involved in the game for years to come but i know the people at vexilar know that they are going to have to do something.

btw...i'm still an old fuddy duddy like most.  i love my lx5 and my backup fl18.  i use my phone for gps and mapping.  but what bird/garmin are putting out is drawing me like a mosquito to a blue light.

To add to the more new stuff coming out, anyone seen the Glo-Ring Vexilar is coming out with? I am assuming its going to be a glow cup to light up your jigs and such but cant seem to find much info on it as of yet

nevermind.  vex is setting the icefishing world on fire with their innovative features.  i was wrong.  lol

Here is the video that is making me think about the investment in a livescope unit this year. If you want to see what perch and structure looks like with the new unit, skip to 6mins in.

I might just settle for last years ice package since I can get it sooner and use it for the rest of the open water season. Plus saving the extra $500 might be a better choice since I’m not getting paid as a guide or in tournaments.

You just had to show me that...now I need to find an ice package with a compatible unit.
that ice mount is insanely priced for a threaded plastic stick. I’m only finding the ice bag and transducer kit separate from the echomap unit. Buying them separately would cost 200-300 more. I can’t have it mounted to just one boat so I need to keep it portable. I don’t want to have to build my own box/bag...

I used a clam flasher bag. The new livescope has a black box that is around 5-7# and as big as another head unit. I'm not sure it's really feasible on the ice. Go with the ps22 and an echomap chirp or echomap chirp plus unit and you're golden .

Why not just make a treaded plastic stick ?? With some extruded acrylic 1 inch rod cut to size needed then heat with a blow torch to bend end like a waling cane handle .. then take a bucket lid and drill just under a 1 inch hole like 15/16 of a inch then push acrylic rod threw
.. you could also use some o-rings to stop it from slipping if needed.  Make a end that holds the unit like a transom trolling motor does .. for $10  you can make some thing worth $100 you know what I mean.. by the way sorry to show you that link..  >:D

i only had 1 day of use out of a panoptix unit.  the day before we found fish but it was a scattered bowl lake and we drilled probably 150 holes between 3 guys to find 20 fish.  the next day a guys buddy brought out the panoptix we caught well over 200 fish the 4 of us and drilled only 25-30 holes due to the panoptix.  its still way out of my price range but its worth on ice is proven to me.

On Garmins site I noticed that it’s the plus model for this year, though they haven’t listed a livescope ice package yet. By the sound of it, the black box might make it difficult to put in an ice pack. Maybe the next generation will be more portable.
I’m prob going to end up ordering last years package with the chirp unit instead of waiting for the new one with the plus model....

The plus model's touchscreen makes changing settings a lot easier. I have a chirp and am tempted to upgrade. For what it's worth, you should be aware that the plus does have considerably higher power drain when wifi is enabled. You can always turn it off though.

Well I pulled the trigger and placed the order through dicks since they have last years model in stock. It should be here next Tuesday, however with work and weather forecast, it looks like I won’t be able to try it till the week after. Before the ice season starts I’ll prob be ordering a lithium battery replacement to make the package lighter. I just wished they had the boat mount available for the ice mount stick. I’ve seen it in a few videos, but I guess they haven’t rolled it out yet. I’ll have to make the fishin buddy sonar mount I have work for the rest of this season.

ETA: this is a screenshot of the stick mount for the boat. The video was posted oct of 2017, any word about it being rolled out anytime soon?

I happened to run into a couple Shimano “reps” I guess I’d call them. Asked the first thing that came to mind...when is Shimano gonna make an ice rod? The guys got pretty excited and told me that something had been in the works for a few years and they’re ready to roll something out this year. They said to look for it in November and they would be at the St Paul expo with it. Sounded like it would be something to compete with the so called “custom” mass produced rods. Emphasized to be patient and that they had kind of a plan of sorts for the next couple years of where they wanted to be and what kind of market they would be in. Sounded like they had done some market research and realized they are missing out. I was pretty excited as I always thought Shimano gear was quality stuff. Too bad, looks like I’m gonna have to buy some more stuff.  ::)

Shimano has always been kind of afraid of the ice fishing market.  They will debut at least two types of rods and at least one spinning combo with the Sienna reel this season.  They should've marketed the 500 sized spinning reels more, but looks like they're scaling back on them.

I would agree on pushing more the 500 sized reels. I have heard a rumor that Okuma is going to be coming out with a 500 series bait feeder. If/Once that happens, im switching all of my Sahara's over to those. I love shimano but it will be hard to find some of the higher end shimanos in the 500 size

I got nowhere with Garmin when I inquired about the open water mount, even though people on
Facebook had gotten them at shows. So I made an open water mount out of 1" schedule 80 PVC and mounted it using a 1" ram ball, ram arm, and 1" ram tough clamp. I read some stuff about the ice mount not being rigid enough for open water use when moving, but the schedule 80 PVC is super strong and not very expensive.

Sold my Eskimo Z51 and bought a Rigid Drill, Hooked it up to a Mini Nero Auger and couldn't be happier. Cuts 2 to 2 1/2 times faster than the Eskimo and I always thought my Eskimo was faster than most other people out there. I always sharpened my own blades and never had a problem with the eskimo.

Received this email from Otter this morning regarding their new shelters:

Quote
Otter® Introduces New X-Over Series of Thermal Ice Shelters

For Immediate Release: August, 14, 2018. The toughest, strongest and warmest shelters on ice are now the most versatile as well. Otter’s new X-Over (“Cross Over”) flip-style ice shelters convert from traditional front-door entry to convenient side-door entry – and back again – in seconds. New EZ Lock Frame Assembly innovation reduces the time to initially assemble a X-Over shelter frame by 75 percent.

“No matter how you like to fish on the ice, we’ve got you covered with the new X-Over series,” says Otter National Sales Manager Troy Tufto. “We give you both options – you can fish traditionally out of the front door like you’re used to; or in seconds, you can convert to complete side-door entry and exit. That is on top of all the great features that have made us who we are – oversized square-tube framing, Patent Pending Otter ThermalTec shell, above-sled seating and a made-in-the-USA RotoMolded sled.”

Otter’s innovative new Patent Pending Quick-Switch frame allows the easy conversion from traditional front door to side-door entry. “You can convert to side entry and back again to traditional in seconds,” Tufto says. After setting up a X-Over shelter in the traditional flip-up manner, side-entry is enabled by simply reconnecting a frame post from the main hub to a connector on the bottom frame, re-positioning away from obstructing the zippered side door.

“We have spent the last year engineering a new way to make a side-entry fish house,” Tufto recalls. “We were confident we could build a series that had both the innovation and durability that Otter is know for.”

Most important, Tufto says, was ensuring ease of use. “One of the main factors in our engineering process was that it sets up just like a traditional fish house,” he says. “Anyone who’s ever fished out of a flip-style shelter won’t have to worry that it will be difficult to set up. There’s absolutely no difference.”

Ice anglers fishing with friends will especially appreciate the X-Over series’ side-entry option. “Since you both have your own door, you’ll both have more fishing area in front of you,” Tufto explains. “You don’t need to leave a pathway out of the front; you’re not crawling through your gear, through your fishing holes, through your flasher, through your heater. You’ve got unencumbered entrance and egress.”

Another innovative feature of the new X-Over series is the EZ Lock Assembly technology, which eliminates framing screws and reduces frame-assembly time by 75%.

“We used to have 40-some pieces for the frame in the hardware pack – now the frames are coming 80 percent pre-assembled in the box and we’ve eliminated the use of sheet-metal screws during assembly,” Tufto says. “That really wows people. Now we not only have strongest frame on the market, we have the easiest-to-assemble as well.”

X-Over shelters are available in two models – Otter XT Pro X-Over and Otter XT X-Over. XT Pro X-Over models feature Patent Pending Otter ThermalTec Triple Layer Insulated 1,200 Denier Shell, Deluxe Padded and Swivel Bucket seats and an Otter Pro Sled. XT X-Over models feature Patent Pending Otter ThermalTec Triple Layer Insulated 600 Denier Shell, Flip-Up Padded Bench seating and an Otter XT Sled. Both XT X-Over and XT Pro X-Over models are offered in four sizes – Cottage, Cabin, Lodge and Resort.

Each model and size feature the new Quick Switch Frame, EZ Lock technology and side-entry doors in addition to Otters 4S’s of game-changing innovative features, which are:

·     ThermalTec Insulated Shell – Otter’s patent-pending insulated shell stops wind and blocks light. The triple-layer system offers outstanding thermal qualities and virtually eliminates internal condensation.
·     Xtreme Duty Square Tube Framing – The key to an Otter shelter’s sturdiness is it’s heavy-duty, oversized square tube aluminum frame, integrated with anodized receiver tubes with an ultra-glide system.
·     Above-Sled Seating – All seating is mounted above the sled to maximize cargo access and capacity.
·     RotoMolded sled – Made in the USA and designed for cold weather and extreme conditions.

And now Rapala just officially announced some new monofilament that should be available soon. It was first shown at iCast I believe. Sounds to me like it could provide some benefits for ice fishing.

Here's a link: http://blog.rapala.com/sufix/new-sufix-advance-monofilament-the-mono-that-thinks-its-a-braid/

Edit: It's actually available for purchase on their website now!

Upnorthsports.com leaked a bunch of new product.  Namely Clam.  Looks like new suits, a new dead stick rod, new boots, a fishing/tackle backpack.  I'm still looking through it as I type this.

not everything they are showing is new this year some of it came out last year. there might be minor changes to some stuff but there is not really that much stuff that is new this year. official Clam product release coming in 3 or 4 days. The Pro Staff members are going to be getting the run down on the new stuff this Friday at the annual Pro Day they hold for use each year. the new stuff along with the rest of the product line will be on display at the MN State Fair.

It'd be nice if they quit pricing their tackle above all the other brands. Its by no means better than the rest for most things.

Just buy a strip of RGB leds from amazon for $10 and an RGB remote for $5. Plug them directly into your flasher battery and you’ve just saved yourself about 75 bucks. Even if you needed a battery, SLA batteries are relatively dirt cheap. I got a 12v 12ah battery for $25 shipped. You could even use AA battery packs (especially for low powered leds).

Honestly, diy leds are the way to go if leds are your thing. No need to shell out $100 dollars for any led light (for ice fishing anyways). It’s products like this that make me not a huge fan of Clam. Kind of like their $100 folding chair that’s awkward and bulky. Don’t get me started on their jigs. Their price to value ratio has always seemed way off to me. However, I absolutely love my Clam Plate. Ok, ok, Clam rant over :)

Received this email from Otter this morning regarding their new shelters:

Doesn't look like they changed the XT Hideout at all.

Anyone planning to switch from gas to ion Auger this year. I mentioned it to my wife and got an earful about how nothing is wrong with my gas Auger. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I went to the Strikemaster Lithium last year when they had the deal going for an extra battery and it was the best fishing purchase I’ve ever made, open water or ice. I got 108 holes through 23” on Lake Pahoja back in January (one battery) just to see what it would do and still had juice left. Two batteries would easily get most people through a week long trip. I didn’t baby the batteries either, it was 10° out and I left the spare in the little cubby below the seat on my Nanook. End of the day it showed full charge, I drilled about 10 or so holes with it and it still read full charge.

It’s soooooo nice just grabbing the auger and pushing a button. No pull starting, flooding, noise, gas leaking...and it’s faster than most gas augers.

Don’t ask your wife, just go buy one and tell her about it afterwards. What’s she going to do, divorce you?

I’ve been running electric drill with clam plate since I got into the sport a few years back, all my friends are converting to drill or electric augers too.

I'll probably use gas forever,  a well maintained 2 stroke starts in 2 pulls or so and isn't one more thing to plug in when I get home.  Parts are cheap with used augers sometimes going for as low as 60 and nearly everything can be fixed myself.

The issue with the Jiffy, is that they had/have a pretty lousy marketing for this auger already. Yes they are late to the electric game but what is their selling point that makes them better then the rest of market? That it is 42 volt and 6 amp over the SM 40V, 5amp? I sure hope not if it cant stand up to the inches of ice it can chrew threw with the ripper blades. They created some hype on FB with their countdown and have seen some people ask questions via their FB page about the longevity of the batteries and how much ice it will chew threw. So far I haven't seen any answers to this specific question. If you are going to sell an auger, people want real data before dropping that kind of coin on a machine.

I hope they prove me wrong and the thing is top of the line. That way it pushes the other electric auger companies out there to come out with something better.

Only time will tell.....

Ripper blades would be the attraction, but that might limit the number of holes. Guess we'll see,  outta my price range for now

Ooooooohhhhh.   A polycarbonate spoon with a glow stick...cool.

It's like the old Yozuri lures with glow sticks inserts.  Only it's a spoon.

Okay I went to the store to check out the Lindy glow sticks spoon there and wasn't that impressed with the finished product appearance.   I'm sure it will catch fish when it doesn't matter so much.  So I got other stuff from impulse buying.

I bought a Northland jig with a belly spinning blade.  Not that it's much different from a road runner or the Thumper jig.  But it's just a little different.

I also bought that VenomFloat spoon with the extra line tie hole.  To be honest I think the extra line tie is on the wrong side for fluttering effect, but it would be on the correct side for chatter blade swimming effect.  I only bought the smallest one.  Turns out I didn't read the package glow effect requirements for uv light to charge the glow.  Good thing I do have such a uv light.

And of course I bought into Acme Hyper Rattle bait.  Not for the rattle but because of its mean looking angry eyes.  It's a heavyweight lure and dives down fast.
