Best line?
« on: Jan 11, 2018, 09:56 PM »
I figure its time to respool my 2x 2 lb test rigs, 4 lb setup, and 6 lb rig. Went out on the ice last week with 6 lb rig and it was coiled so bad i couldnt feel a thing. Also ice was getting stuck to the line like none other. Whats the best line out there to alleviate these problems?

Sorry but there is no one best line. I'd say use braided because it doesn't coil but it can ice up pretty badly. All lines ice up though, just braided more than others. It's not an issue if you're in a tent. Otherwise you might just stick with mono for your lighter test and braided for 6 lb and greater. Pure fluorocarbon might work because it doesn't have memory and it's pretty resistant to ice. But it is expensive as hell, can be brittle, and knot choices are limited. Don't use high friction type knots such as clinch knots or you'll be breaking off more often.

Pretty sure Floro has MORE memory than standard mono. I use 8lb floro on my ooen water walleye spin rod and there is a ton of memory compared to a copolymer line of equal test.
I just use the Trilene ice line and it seems pretty good.

What's best line for one person will be different for another.  Everyone will have their preferences as well as their favorites.

The best for me is good old Stren mono in the purple box on a in-line reel.
