Years ago, UA use to be made of only nylon.  Worst thing you could get for an underlayer for warmth and moisture wicking.  It didn't do it.  Then they started to make some nylon polyester blend.  Started to get it right.  Not sure what they are now, but from the various testimonial, they must be doing a wonderful job.  Or maybe they just have the best marketing campaign.

If you want some more affordable alternatives.  Just look at some athletic sportwear made of polyester.  Something like jogging/running wear.  If you want the best, look at some ski/snowboarding wear.

DuoFold for me too.  Not too pricey and it does a great job for me on the ice or in a tree stand.

Just dug through my “winter gutchies” drawer (that’s what my Grandpap called em – “winter guchies”) several pair of Duofold – label says “Inner layer 100% Thermax Polyester, Outer layer 55% Polyester & 45% Wool.” Have worn Duofolds since the 70’s.
Two years ago got two pair of the Cabela’s Polartec® E.C.W.C.S. (Extended Cold Weather Clothing System) Polar Weight. Label says “93% Polyester (waffled Malden Polartec® Power Dry for superior moisture wicking) 7% Spandex. What I found was with the Duofold when the temps got to single digits and below just wore more layers. With the Polartec® E.C.W.C.S. you don’t need as many layers and they are fantastic at keeping you dry. After dragging the sled through 8” of snow (no motorized equipment allowed on the ice in PA) sweat was running down my face but the rest of me was fine, never felt clammy or got cold that day. Watch for the sales at Cabela's or their Bargain Cave, they're normally $45 but you can get them on sale for $30.

cabelas ECWCS expedition weight.... I sweat every night on an unheated loading dock, and this stuff wicks moisture quick. If it's good enough for your military, it's good enough for me.

As a base layer, this stuff is great!  Minus33® Merino Wool
I prefer the mid-weight. It is not cheep, but it is the best quality I have seen in a long time.

If I knew some of you really like the GI polypro base layers I would've saved them and offered to some you folks.  I really didn't like them at all.
