Title: long underwear
Post by: Hardguy on Dec 05, 2009, 06:13 PM
I have been looking for a good pair of long johns that do what they claim. I used to wear Damart one piece underwear back when they were worth it. They seem to have went down hill. I also tryed Under Armour and the jury is still out on them. You will spend about one hundred dollars on either of the above mentioned products. I dont mind if they work. Does anyone know of a quality longjohn that is light weight and works?

yep check your local walmart spoting goods section and see if they carry the rocky brand compression fit top and bottoms about 15$ for each piece and I love them

I've found that it you don't really need to spend much money on long underwear.  Look at what the cheaper stuff is made out of, then check the more expensive stuff.  It's virtually the same.  Try the stuff at walmart or gander mountain has some for a little bit more than that that is good stuff.  The most important thing is to fit the weight to your climate and activity.

I swear by my Under Armour, if it's real cold polyproplene over that and a gor tex rain suit to top it off fleece in the middle since I don't belive in insulated outer gear. Try and not wear anything made of cotton. Silk is also great.

Same here. I would never spend $100 on long underwear ??? ???
I like my polyester/fleece heavyweight long johns. Its been awhile since I bought them but I'm guessing I only paid about $20

Fruit of the loom men's active collection base layer....long name. Wal Mart has them. Sounds ridiculous, but they're fantastic.....$8.50....top or bottom. I wear them every day for work.

under armour cold gear is well worth the money spent.  I have had the bottoms for 5 years now and they get worn from late oct thru ice fishing and have 2 tops one gets worn all year for softball and hunting / fishing and the other is heavier strictly hunting fishing.  If its real cold I wear either sweats or a pair of poly / fleece layer over top but I can only recall needing that layer a handful of times.   In my opinion like anything else in the end you get what you pay for quality wise, yes there are knock offs from under armour and is about the same but look at the seems the under armour is reinforced and will not run.  I have literally abused the stuff I have and no rips or tears whatsoever.

I use Merino wool underwear! As long as it's from a quality maker they have all performed great. Well O.K. I'm going to confess to something here. If i know I'm going to be very active or doing a lot of stop and start activities I wear a pair of fishnet underwear. Top and Bottom. I perspire a lot and a pair of these coupled with wool on top are simply amazing. BRYNJE SUPER-THERMO is the name they go by. You can find them here. ttp://www.reliableracing.com/category2.cfm?category=0400&header=BASE%20LAYER%20MENS (http://ttp://www.reliableracing.com/category2.cfm?category=0400&header=BASE%20LAYER%20MENS) Also if your ice fishing partner is starting to annoy you just take of your shirt and show him the fishnets....You will have the shanty to yourself  ;D Seriously though these thing are amazing.

P.S.
Please don't judge me by what i wear  ;)

I like the rockys from walmart, about $20 or so and super comfortable.I have a pair still from 3 years ago with a million miles and washes on them and they are still great. To me $40 bucks on a set of long john's is enough.

One suggestion, I have bought most of my under armour from Marshallsfor $10 - 20.  They dont always have all sizes but I check every other week or so and they also have other name brands for 5-10.  Good stuff for 20% of what you would pay at other stores may have minor imperfections but nothing major my stuff one has the ua logo on the back instead of front and the has 3 of them

I like a lot of Helly Hanson gear including their long underwear.  Its the only higher end long johns I wear, no need to buy, or moreso "try" any of the other expensive stuff, I'm happy with them.  I also wear the cheaper traditional cotton stuff too occasionally on warmer days.

I have used Duo-Fold since long before under armor was around and have nothing but good to say about it. It costs less than half what under armor costs. I bought under armor for my 9yr old son last year and he says it works great but he is young and has nothing to compare it to. I would like to try Under Armor but for the money I know Duo-Fold works.

My vote is for Hot Chili thermals.  Man made synthetic.  Have used them hunting and ice fishing for 4 years now and im very happy with them.

I have both and the UA is better.

I have made the switch from trying to find warm stuff every year to Under Armour and haven't looked back. I have only the cold gear, and it's not to heavy that you can't wear it almost year round. As long as you can keep the moisture away from your body you will keep warm.

Patagonia Capilene if you don't mind the cost.  The call it their base layer and it comes in 4 weights from the lightest on up.  capilene 2 is warm enough for me and very light weight. they also design the front with easy access in mind.  I bought the bottoms and wish I had another pair to wear while one is in the wash that how much they get used.

My view is that is better to go with a lightweight layer next to the skin and wear the warmer stuff over that.

Under armor is great I use mine mostly for hunting and icefishing put them through some abuse and no rips, and I have been using tghem for three years now. Used to use cheap walmart stuff and always had to replace every year cause of rips.

DOES THE COLD GEAR FIT TIGHT, DON'T LIKE TIGHT

DOES THE COLD GEAR FIT TIGHT, DON'T LIKE TIGHT

No it's a a little loose, about as tight as long johns, not baggy but not tight.

But you gotta get the cold gear, not the heat gear. Both will wick moisture, but the heat gear is tight and restrictive to good blood flow and not as thick or warm.

The UA I have is compression. That is tight. It works good but I still liked the Damart from 20 years ago or so. Their one piece was King.
Merino wool underwear? I love merino wool but for underwear? Wouldnt have to worry about body hair after a day of driving deer! I think wool is the best though. I have many pairs of upper end socks and always go back to the wool socks. Where can I find the wool underwear?

I have Patagonia long underwear, I bought them back in 2002, its about time for a new pair. I really don't care about the brand name, cost is an issue and what its made of. COTTON KILLS, was what we were told in college.

I go with middle of the road heavy duty stuff that is a blend of acrylic, polyester, and cotton. Too many layers get too tight of a fit and will make you cold. I always get it one or two sizes too big. The extra insulation plus the warm air pocket is what makes it work.

Planning to get some new underwear, for years I have used DouFold Expedition Weight but can't find them in stores around here anymore. Thinking about Underarmor Base 3 ($$) or should I just use cold gear has anyone used these. Will be doing alot of walking and then just sitting for 4 to 5 hours.

Under Armour takes getting used to one you get the hang of it it works great watch for sales and just get cold gear for a base, fleece the next layer can be had real reasonable at alot of discount stores. A wind water proof shell on top and your set. Some times I where a sweatshirt or sweater if real cold.
