what is a good size walleye to eat
« on: Nov 16, 2006, 07:59 PM »
I plan to fish for some walleye this year on the ice, and i am wondering is there a certain size that is good for eating? I believe some lakes they have to be 18 inches to keep them? I have heard not to eat monster lake trout because of the toxins in them, is this also true with big walleye? thanks    ken

i second that. The big ones are a plus because you can get the Cheeks out of them.
sometime you just have to think like a fish.

I personally dont like to keep any over 24" its seems that once they get to be this size they are harder to come by so i let them go to do some more breeding and grow bigger :)

Me too FK. I like them between 15 and 20 inches (which are the size of most of the ones I'm catching anyway.)

Ken, You're in my neck of the woods. Most of the lakes around here in (upstate NY) the min size is 15 inches. Where ya headed?

PS - don't forget to eat some panfish like that slab you're holding  ;)

personally i like the smaller ones better(15-24") but if cooked right all can taste great. around here we have no shortage of fish in the 6-10lb class but i prefer to put them back and keep the smaller ones.

I have to agree with bartman.....15 to 20 inches are my selected table fare of choice.  Then again he and I fish the same water for walleye and like he said that is the majority of legal size fish caught there.

Another lake I fish I tend to catch bigger and they taste good too, just not as good as the 2 to 3 pounders.   ;D

In Saskatchewan we have an upper size limit now so you're only allowed to have one 22" or longer in your posession (that's about a 4 pounder).  Increasing fishing pressure dictated upper size limits for the whole province with additional regs for various waters. Anything from a pound and a half to 3 1/2 works for me, but back in the day we used to eat them all, feeding 6 and 7 pounders into the smoker.  Then there weren't nearly as many boats out there and they were easier to catch.
The problem with quotes on the internet is that they're difficult to prove.

If your standing on the ice look down. That eye you just pulled out of the hole is the best size to eat.  Start there and you really can't go wrong! ;D ;D :woot: ;D ;D

The older and larger the fish the more metal and pcb buildup it has...........Maybe your waters are un-polluted though?
Size limit on the lake I fish is 14' minimum.  Ill eat them up to 22 though.....

I've never ate a bad tasting walleye but as many other guys I typically release the larger ones. Depends how my season is going but typically anything over 24+ gets released

IMHo, Keeper to 22" taste best.  Bigger get a photo and released.  Walleye growth rate slows down considerably once they hit about 22" or so.  The larger fish are several years+ old  accumulate mercury from the environment big time.
