Case Lake Ice Fishing Derby
« on: Jan 24, 2006, 03:57 PM »
FYI
things have changed some this year. there are 5 seperate categories, (perch, trout, crappie, bluegill and walleye). we did this to make things a little more fair for everyone.
for example: a trout fisherman who catches a limit of 30" trout (total would be 150" and they would have to release 3 of them) doesn't stand a chance against a perch fisherman that catches a limit of 6" perch (a total of 300").

we will be paying top 5 places in each category.
there are bonus prizes for the largest fish in each category, (prizes yet to be determined).
it is a 2/3rds payout from all registration fees. (almost $2000 pay out last year).
New York State Dept. of Enviromental Conservation (NYSDEC) regulations must be followed.
there is a childrens division, (12 and under and accompanied by parent or legal gaurdian or responsible adult).
registration opens at 6:00am.
allowed on the ice at 7:30am (set up huts, drill holes, lay out tipups, etc.).
begin fishing at 8:00am. and end fishing at 3:00pm
fish must be measured in live condition.
fish must be at least 6" in length or legal limit per NYSDEC regulations.
fish must be fairly caught, live bait may be used.
prizes awarded based on total length of tallied fish,(measured in whole inches). maximum number of fish tallied is the NYSDEC creel limit, (even if fish are released).
judges decisions are final.
tally sheets must be received by 3:30pm at check-in station.
registration is open all day.
registration fee is $15.00 for persons over 12 years and $10.00 for persons 12 and under.
there are door prizes.
there is a 50/50 raffle.
we also will be raffling a aquaview camera or a vexilar, (yet to be determined).
there will be hot coffee or hot chocolate and donuts available throughout the day or until gone.
there will be hamburgs and hotdogs available from 10:00am til end of event or until gone.
soft drinks and bottled water will also be available.

i think that should answer most questions but if it don't i can be reached a couple different ways.

bring your fishing licenses with you because NYSDEC will probably show up to check them. they have been kind in the past and have not wrote any tickets even though they could have. so please don't press your luck.

on behalf of the Franklinville Area Chamber of Commerce we hope to see you there.

i wouldn't have made it a category if NYSDEC hadn't said they were in there.
i also know of three different people who said they have caught them though i never seen them.
and a couple years back when the derby started i met a guy that told me when he was doing some work at a fish hatchery that had closed he found these walleye fingerlings in one of the drained ponds so he put them in a 55 gallon drum and dumped them in the creek above the lake. he told me he had to dump them in the creek because NYSDEC told him he couldn't dump them in the lake.

like that was supposed to make a difference

About 10 years back I actually caught 2 - 18" walleye out of the overflow catch at the bottom of the hill on the back side of the dike.  There were several in there swimming around chasing minnows on that day. Never saw them again and never caught any again.

Since NY state allows any combination of 5 ups/downs and also 2 jigging sticks, I would imagine it is the same for this derby! I personally have never fished any derby where they alter you from what your allowed to use!
Guess I could be wrong though!  :-\
PM hookedonice, he is running the tournie... or butterworm is a judge, he may be able to help you as well!

all NYS rules apply, like oak said 5 tip-up/downs and 2 hand lines, any bait is allowed on this lake live or fake  walleye are in the creek on the otherside of the lake im sure, they are in the ishua creek and that creek is off ishua

checked the lake last night around 5:30pm. shore ice is alittle iffy near the boat launch. access at the normal parking area. ice was about 5 to 6in solid with 1 inch of crudd on top. could use a couple days of good cold temps to sure up the shore ice a little better but should be accessable for the w/e.
