Sometimes good, sometimes ......         Delta Lake State Park has both a public beach and parking area where you can access the ice.

There are 2 areas for public parking from the main entrance off 46 depends on where you want to fish. As far as the lake itself it is a good lake overall like must lakes if you find the fish your golden if you don't then you get skunked. The whole lake can produce a lot of different spices of fish. I fished all over that lake and have caught my far share of nice fish some days I'll slam the fish go back the very next day to the same spot and get skunked. If your new to the area and want to try it out start out on the back sets which is to the right once you get in or in front of the beach or beach house those are your best options from there explore the lake. Good luck this year and my your flags stand high and your rods bend.  ;D

Title: Re: Delta lake
Post by: gubby on Dec 30, 2014, 11:03 PM
Not sure how the fishing is going to be this year! Drove by delta today and there's still a lot of water coming over the dam and the back sets are flooded. If we get this below freezing temp they say we're getting and there's still all that water to be let out it makes for some scary fishing. Nothing like drilling through the ice and find air between the ice and the water. Couple years ago there was about 6 " of air between the ice and water every time there was a crack in the ice you puckered your cheeks and prayed you didn't go through. Check the ice be for you venture out. Stay safe  :o

Drifter best piece of advice I could give you is stop trying to acheive your goal with multiple cheap used items.
Save your money until you can buy something that will work.  Buying multiple cheap items will cost you more in the long run and accomplish little to nothing.
Check out the marcum showdown troller online.  The 2.0 is $200, but the original version (just lacks zoom) is now $120-$150

Been ice fishing delta for a long time never seen it once, and ive seen the lake go up and down through out the course of a season like you wouldnt believe.. All that ever happens is the shore ice collapses... That said, Ive heard this rumor of space between the water and ice a few times, i honestly think its some made up thing... It just seems that its almost impossible out over the open lake,Ice is strong but all its strength comes from being on top of water, and to think that ice could hold its weight away from the water from say the beech out to stokes cove is just crazy, Id have to see it 1st hand to believe it..

I  WAS  ON  ICE   IN  FULTON   IN  THE  RIVER  AND  THE  WATER  DROPED   AND  ALL OF A  SUDDEN  THAT  ICE   WENT  DOWN   I NEVER  SEEN  NOTHING  LIKE  THAT  BUT  IT ALL  HAPPEN    RIGHT  AS  THE  WATER  DROPED   SO I  DON'T  THINK  ICE  HAN  BE  ABOVE  THE  WATER  FOR A  BIG  SPAN  THE  WEIGHT  WOULD  BE  TO MUCH ......  I  THINK!
Title: Re: Delta lake
Post by: bigZin315 on Dec 31, 2014, 08:21 PM
I agree that's way too much weight to hold up plus the water is what helps strengthen the ice being boyant.
Title: Re: Delta lake
Post by: HybridHunter on Dec 31, 2014, 09:43 PM
I've been on Hinkley and had it happen. Throughout the course of one day, the lake dropped a foot. There are times where there will be a brief gap, but the ice quickly drops. As stated, it can't hold its own weight for long. Delta however, never seen it. I'm sure what you're seeing, hearing, are pressure cracks from the lake making ice!

that's what  happened  on  the  river  the  water  droped and  within  seconds  the  ice   went  down too  ...was  scary  but  only thing i  seen  is   it  buckled a little  around  the  shore

was out there yesterday from sun up till noon didnt get a bite.. Friend i met up with got a 20 inch walleye in the middle of the backset..  water is roughly 8 feet deeper than your used to back there.. I fished one of my normal spots and its usually 5-8fow it was  about 12 -16fow yesterday..
Ice is good about 5 inches, guys were out there with wheelers and sleds.. But they made one hell of a racket on the ice when they drove across...

Fished Delta today. Fish were no where to be found. Fished all over, punched about 100 holes and didn't mark a single fish. I think the water needs to clear up and recede before the bite gets decent.

Fishbone saw earlier that you posted a new bait shop in westmoreland. Then I went back to get the guys name and saw it was gone. I think that was advertising so if you can you please PM me the guys phone number so I can call him thanks .

Fish bone checked the bait shop list as well not there but judging by the post on that site looks like you can put his info on there. They need to update that list because they still have woods and waters as well as D&D sports and gander mountain new Hartford as places that sell minnows and there closed .

Save yourself some walking and park back behind the park pole barn and walk out from the camp sites. You will walk out onto the first backset. If you're looking for walleye, stick to the main lake

I fished this morning and that was a mistake. If you got a wheeler your in for a serious workout. Coming out of the backset there were 1 1/2 to 2 foot drifts the whole way. There were a few slushy spots. Fishing was alright until the wind picked up.

Can someone please give me some information on the tournament that is this weekend (Feb. 21st).
My husband and I are looking to take our son somewhere new since we mostly fish Lake George & Canadarago.

I did not end up going due to issues with my furnace at 4am. By the time I got it back up and running, it wasn't worth it for me to go. Might try again Thursday or Friday.

There is about 18" of snow only found one spot that had slush other than where I drilled and the water came up . The bite was not good where I fished

Easiest parking/access to the backsets?

Post by: salmonseeker on Feb 18, 2015, 11:59 AM
Pull into the state park and hang a right, then another quick right, by the park police station, they have an anglers parking among the maintenance buildings, follow the trail through the woods till ya get to the water.

What's been biting out that way? Northerns? Walleye?

Went out on the main lake from the beach today. No problem with the sled. At first it seemed there was no slush, just hard packed snow. Started setting tip ups and found some spots of knee deep slush. Just depends on where you are I guess. Sun was nice, bite was slow.

I am sure both if you find them. I don't fish it all to often, even though its 5 minutes from my house, id rather torture myself on Oneida!! lol

I have a friend that fishes it often and does well on the perch and craps, with an eye thrown in every now and again.

The fish in Delta have a way of hiding, but if you can find them, it can be a good day!

I took a drive on my sled today and it is MUCH improved from two weekends ago.  Only hit one spot of slush, near shore.  I think you will be able to find a dry spot to fish.

It is going to be a very cold start to the day. A shanty and heat is a must. I've heard the slush is better but can't say for sure. And it wasn't 1" of slush last time I was there, it was up to my knees.

Was a tough day, Met up with FishNY about 545am and trudged our way out with our gear after some pike, got a few flags shortly after setting up with a small pickerel here and there.. Mid afternoon things started looking like it wasnt going to happen..Folks around the lake didnt seem like they were getting much either so we figured the fish werent turned on.. But then a flag poped up and Delta gave up a nice one for our efforts...

She went 39 inches 15lbs 10 OZ and took 1st in the tourney for the Pike category..

Even got some video of the catch..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMOZ-ZThWL4

At the awards ceremony after we got a run down of the fish caught for the day..

A lot of pickerel were pulled up !!! Heard some guys got a dozen or more
Only 2 Walleye, A few Perch and 2 Crappies were entered !!! Overall a very slow Day for the Big D...
Believe the eyes were a 15" and a 16"
Perch I cant remember
and the Crappies were a 10" and a 13 1/2 "

There were some nice prizes raffled off after the tourney.. Kudos to the Folks that ran it.. Especially with the Lake conditions what they were...

I had a good time Jay it was a pleasure fishing with you !!

Almost forgot !! Big thanks to Rudy that was fishing near us with his son for the ride in to the weigh station.. Id still be lugging the fish there if you didnt help me out Much Appreciated !!!

Nice fish dude!!! There were more than 2 perch entered. My buddy got the first place slob and I missed third by a quarter inch, but I did get the first place walleye. Can't believe I won with a 16 1/4 inch walleye! And the fact there were only two entered! Was a great derby as it always is. Wish I won one of those power augers though...  ;D

Although a slow bite, it was one of my best days on the ice learning some tricks from the pike master! I can't wait till it picks up. Icing that fish couldn't have went any smoother.
Its now after midnight and I just got home from grooming sled trails. I'm shot! I can hardly move and anyone who made the treck out there today is impressive in its self! I'll definitely be there again next year!

I'm sorry to say I was hugely mistaken about the slush situation!  Got stuck more times than I could count once I had the shack and fishing partner on the snowmobile.  Hope everyone got around the ice safely and had a great time all the same!!

Its winter in CNY !!! We either sit home and not go out or go out and muscle our way through it !! It could have been worse and im sure we have all been out in worse conditions is all i can say..

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. That's one of the reasons I decided to walk and leave my sled home. Were you on the main lake or the backsets?

That slush was awful. My friend got his sled buried and then I got mine buried helping him out. Good thing we brought a shovel or else we would have been screwed. It was worth the effort though. Hopefully it tightens up before next weekend.

I have not heard of any of these things. Unless they were close to the dam, I find it hard to believe someone went through. There is a lot of ice out there 20"+, and the main lake had over 100 ppl on it Saturday for the derby with no issue.

Might just be a rumor. If someone fell through, they fell through the 8 inches of slush and 18 inches of snow.  ;D

Theyre always letting water out this time of year and especially with the amount of snow we have, just preparing for the eventual thaw.. Delta Dams main purpose is flood control and providing water to the canal..

I dont know if anyone went through, not saying it didnt happen, but there is a ton of ice, with a load of snow on top with a load of slush between.. One would think they went through if they havent been on a lake thats in its current conditions id imagine..
