Back when what is now Sterling Forest State Park was private property under the direction of the Sterling Forest Corp.(you paid a yearly fee to fish) walleye were stocked in Blue Lake even then the number caught or should I say reported and talked about were low.A friend of mine is one of the few people I known with photographic proof of a walleye catch .(a seven pound beauty) This was in the late 1980's I do not think NY. state has ever stocked walleye in Blue Lake there could be a few naturally reproducing fish left.
Eagle Lake as Pooley says is a small lake it was drawn down a few year back to repair it's spillway I do not know if it ever was restocked. At one time it was a hot lake for chain pickerel on tip ups >my personal best chain pickerel is from Eagle Lake (25 inches).
I would think the northern most of the Laurel Meadows ponds should be open it is another mud puddle to quote Pooley. My thanks also Pooley for your updates on lakes open for fishing.
If you do not want to wait for Pooley's reports the phone number for the Sterling Forest visitor's center is (845-351-5907)

Laurel meadows pond is actually pretty big now due to the beavers. There was open water on it last week.

I went up to Harriman to see if anything opened today. There was a guy on welch with a spud and he measured 6-8 inches in different spots. He was going to call the people at tiorati circle to let them know. Hopefully they will send an official down to measure.

they only have that little drainage pit open!  between tioroti and silvermine! lol .. that is nothing but a drainage ditch along seven lakes drive! Fair warning to anyone not familiar with the park.. it is too small to hold much of anything let alone a keeper... complete joke! feel sorry for those who don't know better and waiste expensive gas going there to find out! NOT WORTH ICEFISHING NAWAHUNTA !  The name Nawahunta is Mohegan for " place of trout" .. but I seriously doubt it has trout even stockies..too shallow imo  says it is 7 to 10ft deep... unless of coarse it is manged for stockies which is highly unlikely.  probably get small sunfish dink perch and small pkl lmb but i wouldn't waiste gas going there

To avoid further confusion ,Sterling Forest Visitors Center 845-351-5907, 845-351-2568 is the phone number for the Lake Tiorotti office (I think). Both Harriman and Sterling are run by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission but that does not mean one knows what the other is doing unfortunately.

wow! i had a blast both thurs/fri.some of those bass were huge! 6.5 being my biggest hog! all back down  in the holes ..what beautiful fish.. we also caught decent mix of pannies! .. i'm burnt from two straight days! was going to go late this am but thanks to this cool forum and to those updating whom i believe are respectable fishermen!..i won't waiste a trip now and save gas  :) ..today i'll be watching good football later anyway! man i tell you.. i didn't break off one bass or lose one lure ;D.. and all the bass and smaller perch crappie were also released unharmed..i do recommend 6 lb tippet flouro could get away with 4lb or even three like i had on one my combo's ..but those hogs run and you need a quality smooth drag reel.. otherwise go higher lb test or use both..as for todays heatwave quick thaw.. i respect park management in that they red flag when it is unsafe..especially when i'm too busched for three day in row outing! ;) the ice was 8 to 9 mainly but out by the d**n it was slightly thicker like 10inches/// surprisiely we did nothing at the dam..but we found them.. i wish not to internet exactly where :icefish: hockey where were you? did you see me with red sled?

My friends have fished Blue Lake for the last three weekends. It appears that there is 1 pickeral, 1 smallmouth and 1 perch in the lake! ;D It has been really slow on that lake. I don't think it is worth the time. They have had as many as 35 tipups in the water plus a few jigging rods. I have heard good things about Cromwell.

We only had luck with dink perch in blue lk. in past seasons.. the rumor of walleye is a joke imo.. two of us did jig some impressive hogs in the back cove facing the IBM..(30fow) but other than that one day jig a few decent  5 lb bass, we labeled that blue lk a tough lk not worth revisiting.. so after that season, we crossed that off for places to icefish. If only we had a big chump at the top with respect for us outdoor fishing enthusiists! The way I see it, especially the fact ny fishing licenses have more than doubled the last several yrs, we should  have seen some commitment from fishing managements to improve warm water stocking programs. But that seems not the case judging from recent reports. jmho, john

Laurel meadows pond is actually pretty big now due to the beavers. There was open water on it last week.
hockey, I know walleye live long say 20 some years in prime habitable waters.. i have tried blue lk many times and also spoke to enough to know they never took to that drink.. imho, their should have been small ones or even those from the 80s stockings reported .. i have not bothered with blue lk because the perch we caught were only little throwbacks with our luck. I did one walleye every trip but one on swinging bridge.. but that is too far a drive everyday.. maybe greenwood or monksville..thinking of getting a nj license these days

I am hoping for ice tomorrow somwhere!!! today felt to breezy anyway.. i don't mind sub temps but hate a stiff wind on ice..especially smooth black ice .. i am packing  gutter spikes as brakes that seem to fit perfectly into preexisting holes in the gunnels of my plastic tobogan. should at least slow or stop any time wind blows on black ice. I have monday febuary doldrums and really looking forward to ice fishing tomorrow. Is highland an easy place to get on and fish or do I need to know somebody?

Why do you guys let the people that make the rules at Harriman torment you? I stopped thinking about Harriman a long time ago.

the 6" of ice rule is in effect due to being close to new york city. you would not believe how stupid uninformed people can be. also, this is a marginal ice area, and people go through the ice alot around here. this year it is a problem though! i'm not sure why they are not opening some lakes.

as to do we do well, yes we do!

i called this am and all harriman is closed to ice fishing! keeping fingers crossed for tomorrow.. harriman is close to home for me.. with gas prices, i can't really afford 50 dollar round trips for a day of icefishing! I'm one of those jobless obamas not accounted for as unemployed! lol i'm a professional BUM on record!!! .. Another truth is that I paid 70 dollars for a non resident anual ny state fishing license and do not feel that harriman state park is properly managed for  ice fishermen. jmho.. we had very very cold  consecutive days and nights and all the ponds here in warmer regions than harriman park are frozen solid. I suspect there has to be other reasons rather than ice safety issues at harriman, perhaps with the management themselves.. I have no reason to think the ice thickness is a liability concern at this time of year. Something is f'd up

we can't post results, or 50 people will decend on the lake, and it will be fished to death!

city people are stupid, you would not believe what i've seen!

agree pooley, It can easily be fished out if that many were to hit those ponds. But honestly, the most I seen was around two dozen or so spread out and only on the weekends.. but they are not big enough to sustain to much fishing pressure .. I refuse to go to sterling forest.. i do not like that place. . i do not care for greenwood lk because to me it is simply too polluted for eats.. swinging bridge is okay but it is a 80 mile drive each way.. i'm thinking of trying  first time putnam nyc reserviors that are open. I know that isn't close ride but what the hell, i'm not getting any younger!

this is just a thought, anybody ever tried ice fishing oneida lk. ?  I did good there in open water, so the icefishing should be decent.. a poster on the oneida forum referred guide transport service at the top of this website www.strikezonefishing. com

Trapper2000 while Harriman and Sterling Forest are state parks they are managed by the Palisades Intersate Park Commission. This is the reason for the different rules from other state parks and land. Pooley is correct though about many people having no idea of the risks involved with ice fishing.
Mtbusch just remember you need a separate permit from the N.Y.C. D.E.P. to fish the reservoirs, check the booklet you should have obtained with your license. As for Oneida Lake you are talking a huge body of water a guide or someone who fishes it regularly will be of a good use to anyone not overly familiar with the lake. In late February of 2009 I made the trip to fish with other Ice Shanty members it may just have been the day but fishing was slow only four fish (yellow perch)between ten people.

another thing about the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, they're too lazy to open the fishing lot at Rockland Lake, even though the ice is perfectly safe there!

That is my guess, they might be understaffed ? so they feel it is in their own jurisdiction to keep it clean and simple.. keep it closed!.. meanwhile, i just paid a substaintial increase for my non resident nys fishing license. I guess i blame the state more than the palisades commission for overlooking such calamity bs.

I find it odd that  all of sterling forest  ponds have been open for about three weeks now and all the ponds just a few miles away in harriman remain closed. My guess is the ice in harriman park is every bit as thick and safe as sterling.. i still think it is  local politics keeping the state park closed to ice fishermen.  >:(

yup, me andmy buddy knocked em dead the last open day..that day it was pouring spring thunderstorms in the am.. we got there just after the pour..most were leaving the ice while we fished holes whirlpooling all that water on top of the ice into our jigging holes..we caught at least two dozen decent size perch.. after that is was over.. i think it is likely over this year.. i can't see them opening it up for ice fishing with the weather we are getting now. I'm already thinking much farther upstate.
