Underwater At Night
« on: Feb 28, 2005, 07:22 PM »
I was wondering actually how much or far can a fish see under the ice at night?
Are they attracted by the sound of the jig or the glow if using type of jig that glows. I have caught more crappie using the glow type of jigs at night vs using just a regular jig.

It kind of depends on the type of fish. Walleye can see in the dark and prefer to hunt that way. They will avoid lighted areas if possible. Perch on the other hand have terrible eyes and prefer to eat during the day. Thats not to say that they can't be caught at night, but for the most part daytime is better. I have found that glow jigs will outfish nonglow of the same type 3 to 1.

I know Crappies with a light at night are just below the ice.Glow jigs are a plus and so are jigs that make noise.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an  well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, A fishing pole in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming \"WOO HOO, what a ride!
