Auger for windblown poles
« on: Feb 25, 2022, 10:46 AM »
Unfortunately I lost my hand auger for windblown pole holes at sodus last year. Lots of sentimental valu too but anyway any idea where I can get or make one. That style bit is impossible to find for hand drill. Thanks

How big a bit do you need? I have some old spiral wood bits I could weld to a belt handle.
If life were easy everybody would have one.

What is a wind blown pile

The are referring to windbreak poles.  Years ago before flip-overs and hubs, us ice guys used 6' high windbreaks held up by a set of 6 or more poles placed in the ice after you drilled a 2" hole about 4-6" deep.  I still have my auger.  It was made by my grandfather from a 2" boring bit that they used to bore holes in beams when they were building a barn years ago.  If you find a boring bit at a garage sale or at an Amish farm you just grind off the screw in the center and then sharpen the 2 flutes so they meet in the middle.
