N**censored** derby at Lake Buel
« on: Mar 02, 2008, 08:07 PM »
Fished the N**censored** derby at Lake Buel today with Russell, Jeeps, and T2. Windy, Windy, Windy!!! Flags flew constant all morning long till noon. After some burgers on the grill we still managed flags but not as many. All fish were caught on the tips with no jigging done. All together we ice probably 30+ fish(Bass,Pickerals and Perch). All fish were released back except for some of the larger perch caught, which I brought home to enjoy for a small fish fry.

Special thanks to RickC for stopping in to say "Hi" on the ice today. Was good to shoot the bull with ya. Thanks for the use of your quad to weigh in my 3rd place fish as well.

I hope you took care of the 30 close friends you aquired out of the 50/50 raffle
She said if I went fishing she'd be gone, "I'm gonna miss her"...

I think it's a combination of it not being stocked since 97, Then they were overfishing for pike in the mid to late 90's, when everyone there was going for Pike, and some trout fisherman killing even the little stockies to protect "their trout".  Another fact is ignorance by some modern fisherman that can't identify what they are catching.  We were fishing right next to the people that caught the 5lb pickeral, and when they pulled it out of the hole, they were all screaming pike.  they did not know the sepcies until they brought it in for weigh in.

On a positive note, last season i caught a 17 incher, and some otheres i know have caught a few smaller pike this season(less than 5lbs.  So as long as everyone there practices C&R, in another 10 years it might resume as a pike fishery.  keep in in there and give the pike a chance.
