I started with a black and white screen Etrex a long time ago (probably 20 years), A few years ago I upgraded to an Etrex 20 for the color and better topography contrast. I was happy with the 1st one and even happier with the newer model. Neither one ever let me down, and both have saved my butt in heavy fog or snow. If I had to buy another hand held today, it would be an Etrex.

I have the Garmin Etrex 20 and have been really happy. It has a lot of nice features for the price point.

Why?

My cell phone has a GPS. it works without cell phone signal.  I added the Back Country Navigator app mapping software.  I can go anywhere, mark routes and waypoints without schleppin a separate unit (and charger for longer trips).

You should carry your phone in case of emergency anyway.  So, again, why do you need a handheld GPS?

I understand.  Consider this, though.  A cell phone and mapping software will do everything you mention.  And it's a whole lot cheaper.  Just throwin out an alternative...

Onx maps comes to mind. Google maps would also work and its free, but onX has a lot of other really nice features, that will work with your existing phone.

Gaia GPS is a great app for smartphones, just have to download the area map where you will be while on cellular and then has all the features you mentioned even with no cellular as long as your phone has a GPS antenna.
