Best Socks !
« on: Jan 12, 2008, 02:39 PM »
I know the general consensus will be wool but I would like to hear some opinions on a QUALITY sock with the abilities to wick and warmth properties .
Quality boots are a must but In my opinion it wont matter how good the boots are if you don't have a quality sock to back it up with .
Currently I use a Merino sock called Smart Wool available through Cabelas .

With good boots, I recommend no socks.

I've been wearing these for many years (not the same pair). They're extremely warm and very comfortable.

I have used these over the past couple of years w/ a pair of black dress socks as liners ( a trick I learned in the Marines).  They breathe well, & never get too hot in my boots, but boots are always way more of a concern of mine than socks.  Good boots will be a better investment than socks on any day!

You answered your own question, strickly wool 100%, years ago hunting moose in northwest Manitoba, my guide asked me to come back up and run his 60 mile trap line with him thru out the winter, knowing that the average high temp was -10, I asked him how he kept warm doing that, 2 pr of wool socks in plain rubber knee boots and 3 layers of wool on top, at night it would be -40, it can get wet and will still be warm, if would have been 10 yrs younger and single what an experience!

I have found  loose fitting boot  socks to be the key. High end/low end no real difference to me as long as they are loose fitting.

Cabelas Wool Heavyweight Utilmax socks....couple different thicknesses.  $14 pair.  I think you can take a less than perfect pair of boots and greatly improve them with good socks.

Here's a link too the socks:

Wigwam (I think that is how it is spelled) with wool socks over those. Then my Icemans which are 1 size to big to make sure nothing is tight. My feet breath awesome with this setup.

I also use these. They are so thick they are like boot liners! I wear these with my steel toe work boots outside all winter. My job has me outside 75% of the time, the other 25% I spend in a truck with a crappy heater. ;D If I wear snow boots to work(size 14), I mash both the throttle and the brake at the same time. Snow boots are also so heavy that they give me sore hips from all of the walking. I use these socks on the ice as well, I use them under a pair of rocky buckstalker rubber boots with 600 gram thinsulate. I never get cold feet. My iceman have not seen use in 2 seasons now.

Find some alpacca wool socks that fit and you will never go back. I ususally use the nike dry fit sport sock as a liner when it is really cold out.

Just get you a pair of Mickies and the socks dont matter. Just as long as they arent 100 percent cotton -it holds in the moisture.
