Don't leave home without your spud and common sense.
I am amazed at one of my buddies who cuts holes with a power
auger as he walks out. There was a veteran ice fisherman who drowned last year that could have been avoided.
The lake had safe ice near shore and quickly thinned.
Many years ago - I relied on bait shop etc suggestion as to ice conditions. I arrived at
Appletree Bay and saw 2 groups (one in a portable shanty) out on the ice. I walked out spud in hand and at edge of
the bay was cutting through single tap with spud. I measured the ice 2 inches. I walked
in circles thinking I just hit a bad spot. I could not believe the 2 guys out in the portable on the
2 inches.
