How the heck do you cut thru skis?
« on: Nov 09, 2013, 04:47 AM »
Im shortening some skis I have to use as runners on my Otter sled.

I've cut as much as I can.  But how the heck do you cut/saw thru the black plastic material that contacts the ice?

Can you get a sawzall? That would be my guess.

Take your circular saw and put an old blade on backwards, they burn right through the metal...be safe

The edging on downhill skiis is a tough steel. I got a carbide blade for my hacksaw, that cut thru it .

I just finished a Smitty Sled, and and have made furniture out of skis. I have found the newer skis to be tougher to cut but I swear by a sawsall with a Diablo blade. But I agree a hand held jig saw/saber saw, cut off wheel and hacksaw would all work. Just make sure to take a file to the cut edges. They are sharp.
It is what it is....

Some say the Ice Stig merely waves his hand and the skis break like bread.

Porta-band works awesome if you have one.

Otherwise, a hacksaw and some time will get you through with a little effort.

Recip saw works too, but I made a mess out of a set with one, worked gangbusters until I hit the steel edging - so make sure to get a decent blade and start on that side first.

I'd imagine a jigsaw would work too, but you'd need a beefier one and not some cheap scroll saw - again blade selection would be key.

Good luck!

Mine too.  I've got thru all the fiberglass etc.  Its the bottom of the ski that makes contact with the ice... Its almost like a metal.  And on the edges has more metal.
Ive tried hacksaw, and handsaw.  My jigsaw broke.  All I have left is a Reciprocating saw that I haven't tried.

My last set I had where just all fiberglass and easy to cut thru.

help

yup..sorry I missed that from your last post. I received a Diablo brand blade for my reciprocating saw for free in the mail, and it worked great. Just be careful to have the ski in a bench vise or similar set up. I used my old trusty workmate. Those darn edges on the newer skis are pretty tough..

Actually, Sawzall is a registered trademark of Milwaukee electric tool company.
Everyone knows what a sawzall means, but I have no idea what sawsil is.

Know any commercial drywallers? An abrasive blade chop saw is the ideal setup. Drywallers use them to cut steel studs.

I just used my Chop Saw.....

Ditto.

Actually I started with the skil saw first and once I realized it was part metal (going by the sound and sparks) I took out the Chop saw.
See you on the ice!
