Sounder in a pinch?
« on: Jan 30, 2015, 07:00 PM »
The other of day I realized that I didn't have a sounder on me which makes togue fishing a little difficult. So after digging around in my back pack I found a plumb bob I made on a lathe in class. I strung a rubber band through the hole for the string and made a half hitch on the hook... worked like a charm. It got me thinking that some of you guys must have had to improvise at some point as well. Lets hear some idea's for "Sounders in a pinch"

I'm sure a sparkplug is going to be a popular choice

Whenever someone caught a fish...my Uncle David always shouted..."THROW IT BACK TO IT"S MOTHER!!"  I can hear that echoing across the frozen lake now!

A little off the subject, but I saw a guy catch a nice togue on a blaze orange depth sounder once, while he was checking the depth. ::)

Yep, back in the day, I hooked the split shot bag.

Now, extra battery for the LX7.  ;)

Matt, I'm surprised you don't use the flasher to set traps? Just bait the hook and send it down to the desired depth. I will admit it can be a pain in deeper water.

I've had to use a big bucktail a time or two...

I've caught a rainbow on a drop shot sinker at the end of a sabiki rig.

Why are you carrying a plumb bob in your ice fishing pack?

Nuts, bolts, adjustable wrench and heavy jigs.  Ever wonder where all the sounders you make or buy go?  Is there a giant pile of lost sounders somewhere?

I once tied some line around a small rock. and would stick the hook under the loop of line. My brother really like the idea. The his mental wheels started to turn and he though a chunk of ice would be even better cause you can find that where ever you fish. It took him a few minutes after tying it on to remember that whole buoyancy thing.  ;D

Now I mostly do my deep sounding with the sonar. Bait first and send it to the proper depth, don't need to pull it back up. Sure hope I don't drop that down the hole though  :o
