Title: Predictions
Post by: TheCrappieFisherman on Oct 04, 2017, 01:00 PM
Well its fairly slow on the MN Board. Figured I would start a thread now that its October on what peoples predictions are for the upcoming winter; first ice? short, long, early, late, first snow?, will the groundhog see its shadow?  ;D Okay but seriously just thought I'd get some activity going over here.. I realize Minnesota has several other very popular fishing forum websites that probably take people away from here.

First ice: first week in December for mid Minnesota. A week earlier for "up'nort." A week later for down south.
First snow: second week of November, will dwindle down to a couple inches remaining after the ground and warm air melt much of it.
I predict a very snowy winter, affecting the ice quality and my fishing time ending up being spent plowing.

Fishing quality will go up from last winter too.

Ice will remain fishable (enough ice to walk on) til the end of March or early April

First Ice - not soon enough
Season length - too short
First snow - too soon
Ice out - too soon.
Fishing success - could always be better.

That's the most accurate prediction for sure and I completely agree.

I predict this site will be full of who's auger is the best.
 Who's drill is the fastest.
Who's battery drill has the most power.
How many different size drills should I have and is 6 '' better than 8 '' or should I get a 7 3/8 ''.
I say nut's drill a hole anyway you can and lets go fishing.

Got a trip booked with Rainy Daze on Rainy Lake in early January, so hope there is good ice everywhere up there by then. The last 2 seasons, I dont know if it was locked up by January 1st yet as I recall people cancelling trips on LOTW for the Christmas and New Years dates due to no ice

Doesn't catch me fish  :roflmao:

All joking aside, I'm getting excited for this up coming hardwater season!  Saw on the news last night it snowed 2.5" in the cities yesterday back in 2009!

I'm still in the boat because I have been having the best Fall season Crappie fishing I have ever seen. It has been fantastic. I have an older 20 plus year old Huminbird Wide vision in the boat.  Most of this summer I thought it was broken very hard to mark any fish. Fall conditions have turned this around 180. I just came in from a small lake where I marked a bait and fish ball 9' deep. This has been pretty much the norm for the last month. Walleyes now that's another story . So if you don't mind I'll leave the auger in the garage for now.

No predictions, but was in a Runnings store today and they were setting up their ice fishing equipment area. Still no Striker Ice clothing yet, would like to try on for sizing purposes.

If the coming cold stays for the winter I would hope to be on one of the wright county lakes by the weekend after thanksgiving or at the lastest the first week of December. Last year my first day on the ice was December 12th. earliest I have ever been on the ice here in Wright county was November 28th a few years back.

Wednesday I was in the boat catching Crappies in the sunlight with little wind, now we have about 6''of wet snow lots of wind with rain before that. And more on the way  Doors and locks are froze. We call that Minnesota Sunshine.
I guess I better put the boat away.

Never got above 29° here today, low for tonight is around 20°. 10 day outlook is also looking at below average temps for my area.

The low temp early this morning fell to 17.6° at my weather station, still only about 19° at 9am.

My early season spot has about an inch of ice this morning. I'm cautiously optimistic about being able to run some tipups this weekend, maybe...

Reported 1below in I Falls this morning. Redneck I probably don't have to tell you to be careful on new ice . Just a reminder use your spud.

While driving by Lake Stay by Arco yesterday, saw that the entire lake had ice cover, stopped and checked and it was less than 1/2" thick at best. The lake is very small and maybe 7 -8' deep at the deepest part.

Always a good reminder. I wear my mustang suit and swiftwater vest for early season shenanigans.

If y'all ever get the opportunity to take an ice rescue course, I highly recommend it. It's amazing how thin (good) ice can be and still hold weight. Also incredibly hard to get back up on it once you go through. I had never been on candled ice until last year, 10" thick and utter crap.

While I wouldn't bet the farm on this prediction, Accuweather is showing for my area, no highs above freezing for the rest of December, starting Tuesday 12/5. If it holds true should be excellent for making ice.

guess I was wrong with my prediction since most of the lakes have opened back up during this warm spell. come on cold temps. I need to hit the ice and don't want to drive 4 hours to do it.

This weather has taken a big turn recently, thought we would be out by now also. At least all of the ice that did start to form around here has melted so when ice making weather comes back it will be a nice solid base. Tuesday going forward the temps look great

. Well accuweather  wasn't very accurate, from 12/5 to 12/19  11 out of 15 days were above freezing, quite a few well into the 40*s. There prediction now starting tomorrow 12/21- jan 6th is for no temps above freezing and 12 of 17 days to be teens or single digits for highs . Hopefully they get closer in this outlook. We shall see.
