Title: Favorite color for bluegills???
Post by: crappieslayer56 on Jan 06, 2016, 01:27 PM
I'm just curious as to what everyone's favorite color jigs/spoons/plastics are for bluegills? I've had my best luck with chartreuse and white, and sometimes I do well with purple and blue.

Black purple gold red white pink you name it. All depends on the clarity of water and the fishes mood as to what I use. If I had to choose one combo it would be a black jig with a pink plastic

For me it varies from lake to lake. I have a few lakes that are very clear, 1 the best color seems to be blue with glow head (shrimp), the other is same bait but only in chartreuse. Other lakes that are more stained  are anything from gold to purple. I usually keep switching colors until I find what they want

These are my best colors for the waters I fish. The top two are glow and the bottom right jigs have glow eyes.

I've had lots of luck with green and orange and  pink and white Marmooskas on certain lakes.

My favorite color is whatever they are hitting. ;) That said I like Gold in heavily stained waters and Orange and Chartreuse just about anywhere. Also like Clown, and if you looked on my sled you would likely find 6 or 7 color combos rigged and ready. Conditions constantly change, so while it's good to have a go to color it also pays to be flexible.

i usually fish glow colors, but really it depends from trip to trip. if they're aggressive, i really like going to metallics like gold and silver, but when they're really finicky, nothing beats black or pink.

I have always preferred yellow to chartreuse but always had green, purple, orange, and whatever else struck my fancy in my jig box. This pas summer I started doing real well on pink jigs on the local lake. This winter I tried all my tried and true colors and when they didn't seem to work I dug out a pink jig I'd put in the box this summer.  Presto!  For some reason the 'gils like pink on this lake.  Who am I to argue?

I always start with a Fiskas Gold Bead Jig, Glow, 3mm. Usually just tipped with a spike. Usually end up with something different, but I do have some good luck with this!

I read an article from a guy that went over and fished in Europe with the USA ice team. He said that the majority of Europeans kinda laugh at our fascination with trying to pick the right color. Apparently over there it's a pretty general consensus that the only 2 colors needed are gold and lead colored.

Whether that's the case or not I don't know. I personally fish with a lot of gold jigs and something darker on another rod. It's a lot cheaper than buying a hundred different color combo's and still not catch anything.  :P

Dirty water orange and blue ant jigs work the best for us. Not many clear small lakes around with bluegills in this area.

Line weight, jig size, and cadence all trump color, in my book.

Watching the underwater camera for years will teach you a thing or two about what works, and what doesn't.

A friend of mine who fishes gills a lot says "There are only two colors for gills, black and red".  I do fish those colors mostly but have dozens of other colors and color combinations.
