In Wisconsin a lot of shany runners are 2x8 boards covered with an iron strip the width of the runner.

I have a 6'x8' shack that I used 4-2" X 6" pressure treated planks (2 sandwiched to gether per side) as runners. To these I attached 2 sets of old skiskins from a snowmobile (set at each end) this has worked quite well , I can pull the shack with a snowmobile even through deep snow

i have a 5x8 pvc shed from royaloutdoors
you can view it at www.royaloutdoor.com
base is 2x4 and 3/4 plywood to that i added 2-2x8
sandwiched together per side then add 2x6 to the bottom
to form an upsidedown "T" get 4" pvc 9 foot long
cut in half use each half per side screw pvc to bottom of 2x6 on ends cut on angle a wedge get a torch heat the pvc to bend up to form like a lip to seal end of half pipe in behind pipe put a strip of metal or wood and screw end shut to keep pipe from filling with snow
i pull mine with my argo and it floats on snow really good. good luck

I just built my shanty this year, up here in Vermont the typical skis are usually made of wood, but I found some old alpine skis(usually can find them at a dump or buy an old set for relatively next to nothing) I attached them to wooden risers underneath the outside edge of my shanty, I can push or pull it by hand. I simply pulled off the bindings and attached the skis to the wood with medium wood screws(a fair amount of screws) I have had nothing but good luck with it. Good luck.

I was wondering if a guy could use 2inch steel pipe. and put caps on the end so you could pull it around with out snow filling it up. Then you could put a torch to it when it freeze's up. just wondering..

Take steel shaped in a U then bent it into a J and turn it over so that the 2 edges are running on the ice then bolt the other end to what ever you are pulling. you can bend it as far up as you want so if you have lots of snow on the ice your sled doesnt pull through the snow but over it.
