In years past, we've found that using micro tubes and small 1" grubs on 1/64 oz. or 1/80 oz. jigheads without tipping with waxies or maggots to be effective techniques to catching panfish of all kinds through the ice (yellow perch, crappies, bluegills, and rainbow trout). We've also caught predators like small pike, bass, and walleyes while jigging those micro baits. This year, we've discovered that there is a more effective micro plastic that what we've been using. It's been so effective that our maggots and waxworms have either pupated or died before we've had a chance to use them. We've teamed up the Custom Jig's and Spins teaser tails (normally used witht the ratso and shrimpo lures) with glow in the dark 1/80 oz. jigheads. Best colors have been chartreuse glow and white, but have had some success on pink as well. One awesome technique was to fish 3 in tandem, experimenting with colors and distance between jigs to cover the most water. With my electronics, I can fish the bottom and quickly get up in the water column when I see suspended fish cruising in. I'd line up the 3 lures with the suspended cloud of fish, and often catch doubles. Just a trick to pass on to everyone next year. They also work well teamed with the Custom Jigs and Spins dropper spoons. Tight lines and I can't wait until next years ice.
