I use about 150 feet of 30 lb. dacron. I have had the same tip-ups for 35 years.
The spools on these tip-ups only have a capacity of about 200 feet.
There are not too many deep water lakes in NJ. I fish at depths of 10 to 20 feet.
The deep water lakes do not always have safe ice over the deep water, so I fish
along the edges of channels, and in the coves. I like dacron because, it lasts
longer than nylon, has no stretch, and no memory. It comes right off the reel,
and lays out straight. No fuss needed - to stretch out - like other lines. The
larger diameter is easy to handle. Haven't been cut yet. I do use about 4 feet
of monofilament as leader material. Some times the fish can see the dacron.
How much line on your fishing reel do you actually use in open water during the
other months? I look at this way--- if a fish is going to run off 100 feet of
line, then it is probably too big to get through the hole.
