Finding Fish - the basics

Once you have found a spot to try, having a locator is essential to quickly searching out the spot and moving on if no fish are found. If possible, shoot your locator through the ice. On good solid ice you can see fish on your locator without even drilling a hole. Pour a little water on the ice and set the puck in it and move it around until you can see the bottom. If you can see the bottom really good you should be able to see fish.

Try this once - it worked well for me last year, and you can look for fish without even leaving the truck! Get a good quality balloon and cut some of the nipple off. Then fill it with some water, just enough to fill the balloon without stretching it too much. Then get a good rubber band. Slide the balloon up on to your locater's puck and wrap the rubber band around it. Now you have that little pool of water you need to shoot through the ice built right into your locator. This works great and saves time.

Hopefully, with a little luck you will eventually find some fish. With a good locator you can determine what size the fish are, how active they are and how many are down there. Generally if the fish are active they will be flying around and will fly up to greet your bait.
