Prime Real Estate, Pike Style
One of the most consistent winter pike patterns is fishing travel/migration routes. Pike use these areas for both feeding and for moving into spawning/staging areas late in the season. Think of the lake's bottom like dry land. There are distinct levels or "contours." In some areas, the bottom is uniform and flat. In others, several different contours are in close proximity to each other, creating an irregular look. Good travel routes have some form of irregularity on them. In most lakes, this usually means a quick drop into deep water. Long stretches where shallower "feeding" shelves abut the main or semi-basin of the lake are key. On rivers, extended flats or sandbars close to the main channel are excellent.

Fishing specific travel routes involves covering a selection of different depth contours. Have some lines set on shallowest section, and others where the drop-off occurs. Augment this tactic by spreading holes along the contours themselves. Attacking these structures along their length as well as from right angles will help you to zero in on the best areas quicker.

Isolated structure and cover areas can also be key spots. However, all are not created equal. In some cases, humps or rock piles that rise sharply out of deep water, with little or no "lead-in" cover/structure can be hot. This scenario is usually reserved for big, deep lakes where trophy pike behave like lake trout. The biggest pike in the system spend most of their time suspended, following schools of smelts, ciscoes or trout.
