Hey Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has any experience/stories/hints about how to fish either of these lakes.  I am trying to fish the long weekend and would love some advice.  It would be much appreciated.  Things that could help would be bait, depth, and possibly anything else I would need to know.

Thanks,

Matt

Any suggestions for Salmon fishing in general and Keewaydin in particular?

Such as hook size, leader weight/ length, depths, times of day and baits.

Thanks for any info.

I've fished Keewaydin three times in my life. Thankfully I found what bait works the best the very first time I went. The first day I took a buddy that hadn't fished for over 5 years. We purchased bait right next to the pond. An older gentleman that I don't know is still in business. Anyway, he talked us into using Tommy's for bait. Never used them for salmon fishing before and I thought he was just trying to make up for the fact he didn't have any smelt. That day we caught 13 salmon, 2 feet below the ice on Tommy's. #6 red hook, NO sinker and let the Tommy do it's job.

You can send the dozen donuts to Lawrence Lakeside Cabins, Rockwood Maine. I'll be staying there from the 28th of January to the end of the month.

Thanks for the info, very worthy of a dozen. What is a Tommy? I usually use shiners/ smelt.

Would you suggest steel leaders fishing for salmon?

any one had any luck using tommys for lake trout as well as salmon?  Can you put meal worms on a tip up or are they more effective jigging?

There is a shop in oxford (probably 10 miles away) that sells live bait.  I think it's called Smedberg's.  I heard they sell tommys.

I want donuts too

Everyone,

Thanks alot for all the great fishing advice, I really appreciate it.
In Maine can you drive on the ice via truck?
Is the ice that thick, I heard you need at least 15 inches of ice in order to drive on ice.

No insult intended but with your hardwater experience, leave your truck on solid ground!

The little store in Stoneham is selling shiners. They are small, but very nearby. Is Virginia Pond open to ice fishing?

Keewaydin lake is decent ice fishing, and some nice salmon are coming out of it this year.  Brook trout
are there but one has to work for them.   Virginia lake is open to ice fishing.  It has Largemouth bass,
brookies, and very large white perch.  Getting to Virginia is the biggest problem, as the road is closed
approximately 1/2 half mile prior to reaching the lake.  A snowmobile is necessary.  Ice fishing there
is a hit or miss.  I know these lakes very well as I live only a few miles from each of them and fish them
a lot summer and winter.
