How to make a spouse comfortable on the ice
« on: Dec 20, 2008, 07:37 AM »
Last year my daughter had an accident before an acceptable restroom could be found.
Yup lesson learned.
I want my wife to enjoy ice fishing.
Any couples out there with suggestions?

Build a small shack......with wood stove... that way she can sit in it and watch her traps from inside....as for the bathroom...the woods or a bucket!  This is what I did my first year going but not fishing!

A bucket always works but I have been to friend's shanties and they had chemical toilets. They might feel more comfortable on one of those.

This works wonders:

5 gallon pail and one of those plastic toilet seats attached; inside line with a plastic trash bag and a few inches of "kitty litter"; it absorbs the liquid and stops the smell. At the end of the trip toss the bag and litter into the trash.

I always make sure I have enough of those heat packs for everyone on the ice as no one has fun if they are cold, wet and miserable.

I bought a small porta potty, has a cover, under that its shaped like a toilet seat and has storage for a roll of toilet paper. Walmart I think for like 25$ I let the women use it, dont let the guys piss in my shack

large shack, wood stove, satelite radio, portable toilet, red wine/hot chocolate, good food. lots of your own patience - and SHORT trips ;)  Done this MANY times and learned all the above the hard way.......she must love me b/c she still goes with the above caveats and accouterments in place - GOOD LUCK!

Best advice I have is to keep her warm.  Good quality warm boots that fit properly are probably the most important thing.  No matter how hot the fishing is, if she's cold, she won't want to go out again.  A shack to get in out of the wind would also be helpful.

Took her out ice fishing once, had to pull all the traps early and leave for that reason.  The next time i went ice fishing, she stayed home.

If she goes ice fishing now, it is a place where she can take the truck to the nearest store and take care of business.

At camp, she uses a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket with foam pipe insulation around the rim of the bucket.  It's like comforts of home!!!

Leave the little woman home and take your dog !!

Kidding, my girlfriend wants to take up bowhunting and of all things wants to harvest a black bear.

God bless "redneck woman". After two wives I got a farm girls from the sticks and she loves being outside, four wheelers and fishing !!   ;D

There use to be a lady that would jig smelt  at a place I go to in the winter, She was about 300lbs. Every once and a while you would see her pull a tarp up over her, and she would dissapear for a minute then the tarp would come down and right back to jigging. I think she had a jigging hole, and a you know what hole. 8)

If she's from the county, they're tough, she'll drop her drawers and take care of business when the need arises.

The pail & bag is a good idea though.
