blocking the wind?
« on: Jan 27, 2004, 01:11 PM »
i am wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for anything that would help in blocking some wind.  im a broke ass college student that doesnt have the $ for a maufactured shanty.  i know i could make something, but the problem lies in transportation, i drive a little hatchback.  just looking for ideas on something small, compact, and easy to assemble on the ice.  or maybe ill just rob a bank and buy a new truck and the best shanty money can buy ::).  thx fzr

Attach two pieces of conduit to a five gallon bucket and duct tape a blue tarp between them. $10 total materials.

Yes, we used to use the tarp trick. Some of the portables they sell now aren't anything more than that.

If there is enough snow on the ice i build a wall, but you have to kick it down when your done fishing so snowmachines dont hit them.

Two 5x4 sheets of plywood with hinges between them
will do the trick. Fold them for transportation and unfold
at 90-degree as a windbraker. You can also attach a
plank to keep them from folding by itself.

This is a really excellent sled plan that costs about $20 to build. It holds all of your gear and is small and light enough to fit in your backseat.

I made one and attached a $2.50 child's "crazy carpet" sled to the bottom and it slides really nice. Just remember to angle the front so it doesn't dig into the snow.

I used it tonight and it was windier than a b***h and I sat in it for 2 hours with no gloves. Blocks the snow from getting in the holes too.

I highly recommend building one even if you can afford a shanty.

Staples pull out in a wind. Go to a good hardware store and get sheetrock screws and ask fo finish washers, common for cabinet installations. :'(

I made this with some salvaged plywood, 2 piano hinges and an old pair of skis from the thrift shop.  Total cost less than $10.  You might carry something like this on a roof rack, but I took it out to the lake when I had a station wagon.  2x6 blocks to mount the skis give it a little clearance.
The problem with quotes on the internet is that they're difficult to prove.
