Ice baits for Bluegill ?
« on: Nov 07, 2008, 05:14 PM »
The Diamond Eye Jig and Micro Tough Guy from Gitzit have treated me real well over the past few winters, tipped with either a wax worm or a spike.

What baits/jigs do you guys prefer for big bluegill?

I have tossed around the idea of making my own jigs this past year and when I was down at my local bait shop yesterday I saw 4 totes of custom tied jigs. I will be trying this myself over the next moth while I wait for the ice.

I usually use marmish jigs or wolfram, but I did load up on CJ&S gill pill for this season, should be great...the diamond jig looks good as well

Coo huskybass, those are the same exact baits I use. I am having trouble finding the diamond jigs this year, where do you get them?

For Gills my go to lures for a vertical presentation are the CJ&S Demon and the Moon Glitter type lures.

For a horizontal type presentation I use Fiska's Wolfram, Hali's MiniPori, and the Fat Boy (I believe by Lindy). These are often tipped with some small plastic and/or a waxie.

My go to colors are some mixtures of chartreuse, green, and orange, but always make sure I have whites, blues, purples, reds, and blacks in my arsenal. I have an assortment of #10 through #14 size lures.

Whatever it takes to get 'em to hit. Generally start with a Wolfram and Demon in #12/14. Color? Depends, day/night, clear/overcast. But never hesitate to change size, type or color if they won't hit

I just ordered an assortment of micro-tough guys, and I'm looking forward to using them this year.

I have had good success with #12-14 Marmooskas in orange/chart/white, and the diamond jigs in similar colors, as well as black, purple and green.

.....  I'm going to try the Bro Bug from Northland.

Picked up a few at Cabela's, big body size for the hook size, hopefully it'll intimidate some of those dinks that are always buggin' me on a lake I fish often. Sure do have an extra plump body and some big eyes, it will be interesting to see how the fish react.

size 10 or 12 bronze or gold aberdeen on bottom real small split on top and for bait 1 lively spike or 2. for an attracter, i use small pieces of a plastic worm right on the hook and tip it with a maggot or when the bite is hot just that. i sight fish for gills and they will tell you what they want. chartreuse and orange or the 2 best colors where i fish just dont ask me where ::). i have other lures but this seems to work the best on finicky gills, sunnies, perch and crappies. stay on top.
