Ice Fishing Hudson Bay!
« on: Mar 09, 2008, 04:14 PM »
Ok here goes, i wonder if anybody will laugh at me?

I want to go to Churchill, Manitoba and go ice fishing on Hudson Bay for Cod or whatever else lives there.

Am i retarded or is this a possibilty, and are there any guides or outfitters with shantys and snowmachines?

Can you fly to Churchill in the winter?

Any bit of help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Won't laugh at you at all!  Sounds like a great idea!  I've just been checking online to see if there were any winter fishing trips advertised up there, but most seem to be fly-in camps dedicated to huge lakers and arctic grayling.  However, you could try contacting the town council at the following address:

http://www.churchill.ca/

There is a "contact us" at the bottom, and I'm pretty sure you'd get a cordial reply.  Keep us posted if you find a fishing trip (and post pictures if you go)  ;D
Good luck!

How long of an extension would you need to cut through that ice?

No I didn't actually see anyone doing it, I think that is what the Inuit do find a seal air hole and jig away..

Is there any licensing/catch restrictions while on the bay?

I really dont think this is a well thought out plan. when the ice is not very thick the Polar bears really will eat you! When the ice is thicker you would need an extension of epic proportions. I saw an example somewhere on this sight where they drilled throuigh about 14 feet of ice. It was incredible. You could phone an outfitter in Churchill but I bet he would direct you to some lake trout lakes,. I would love to know how this turns out. Keep us posted.

Bears are all but gone from Churchill/Cape Merry by now...not to say that you wont run in to one by chance. Bears much prefer fat tasty seals to boney humans as well :o. Not much for sport fishing in the imediate area. Tried to get to the Seal River for trout once. Our boat motor konked out on Hudson Bay and some Inuit rescued us ;D

I have been up there in early March, walked across to Fort Prince of Wales, which is just a short distance out of Churchill, the tour guide said we were walking over 12 feet of ice................... ..good luck!

I'd say go for it!  Don't let a little ice and some fuzzy little bear keep you from going.

I worked on a movie up there four years ago and wanted to do just that but apparently no one ice fishes on the bay. They go inland to catch lakers and although the bears prefer seals, eating people is better than not eating. By the way, that`s not a joke.

My wife's uncle guided for photographers up at Hudson bay, not much to guiding though, they had a chain link enclosure with an electric fence around it, they just put the bait in the enclosure and the bears would come, the bait of choice was photographers and guides.

The number to the churchill office is 204 675 8897
