Anyone been out on Farmers or any other main lake areas? Just wondering how the ice is.

So I have a question. I am planning a trip out to see what this lake is all about. Just curious on how easy these yellows are to find? It would probably be a 2 or 3 day trip. I have a quad to use once the ice is thick enough. I have all the other necessary gear. Just wondering if I would be able to meet up with someone to talk fishing once I make it out there. I'm not looking for specific spots. Just a general rundown of how the fishing is on this lake.

Buddy I was with caught a 15" crappie on cutbait
Forage spoons/Mud Bugs/ Pilkes with cutbait or spikes

Moving around a lot yes. Normally the first and last hour of sunlight you can stay put on a hole and the fish will stay put. Caught 100 of those yellows off our last hole that we just stayed on top of for an hour. Ice was probably 8-10". Didn't measure

Bockster

Thanks for sharing your information.

I would assume there running ATV's and snowmobiles on the ice up there? I have never fished Clear Lake but with the rain coming for central Iowa I am planning on heading there on Monday.

The ice will be fine. I hope it rains so it melts the snow and it freezes back nice and smooth, lots easier to pull sleds.

Spud bar, ice picks, rope and floating suit or life jacket.  I used to be more trusting "because other people were on the ice" until I went through up to my chest.  It's easy to get in a rush, not want to turn around to get something you left behind, etc., but take a few extra minutes and run through the checklist.  Not trying to be the Ice Safety Patrol, just know how I am when I am trying to hustle out the door to get on the ice.  Rods, flasher, waxies, ice spikes always make it, but I get a bit lazy with the safety gear.

Safe fishing and Merry Christmas.

Sure plan on it, was tossing the idea around with some Des Moines guys, I think I can find a place sheltered a little from the wind. On the south side. What do you think?

Anyone have an ice thickness report. Taking a newbie with me and want to be able to tell her how thick it is before we make the 2 hours drive.

The Dome Bait Shop is back open.

Makes me wonder if Clear Lake can support 3 bait shops, that seems a bit excessive.

I agree! I already feel bad for the Crazy Minnow! KP is too well known up there and he is gonna end him putting both of them out of business! Hopefully they all prosper!!! I will have to spread out my purchases up there and give them all a fair shake!

No worries about the crazy minnow up there as Dan knows how to run a business unlike others.  He also supplies many places with bait including the dome.  The dome and crazy minnow sit in good locations to get bait.  Off of a busy highway that is a pain in the butt to get on and off with a boat.

Right now there is great momentum, hundreds of people on the lake yesterday. I think there is enough to sustain 3 right now, but could drop off quickly.  I think the bait shop business is tough enough without bashing one or the other.

Had a rough couple days. Was in 16fow and had no luck. Noticed everyone is in shallow for the most part. Why would that be at this time of year?
Anyone else having the same outcome?

Fish can be shallow any time of the year. Caught them in as little as 2 fow in dead of winter.
