Cool pics.  I have a question about spearing. I was told by a guy that while spearing he usually only gets about one fish per season.  Is it true that the success rate is really that low?  I know things will vary day by day but how many fish do you average per trip?

Thanks

There have been times I have limited out on pike in just a matter of 3-5 hours spearing. Spearing is like any other type of fishing; if the fish aren't moving, it will be a slow day. I was spearing one day, and there were constantly 4-5 fish through the hole every 2-3 minutes. It was harder trying to figure out which one to spear than it was to spear them.

I used to go pike spearing back home, on a good day you would have 3 to 4 fish.

Thanks for the info.  I have never had much interest in spearing because of what he said but now I think I will check it out.

The main thing is, have a spear with good tines and barbs, especially the barbs. Nothing ruins a day than having a big one wiggle off.

That's a hog of a perch for Montana. I wish the perch would make a come back to the lakes around Helena.  When I was a kid, we would catch them by the bucketfull. Now you might catch a couple in a day.  The regulating reservoir has a lot but they are small. However, they are bigger this year than last and it also seem like this years hatch was good. So, in a few years we should have a good spot.  I also noticed that last year was better than the year before on Canyon Ferry and Hauser, so maybe they are coming back?

Yeah walltrout... I remember when I was a kid I literally caught 75 perch in one day that were 15+" you can feed a lot of people with that much meat! Anyway, if you get a chance to go to Lake Mary Ronan they are making there comeback... Last year a good keeper was about 10" this year they are about 11" but some reaching the 13-14... haven't seen any 15" I am still waiting though ;) Have a great season and maybe I will see you out on one of the lakes on of these days!

just took a big batch of spawners out of the smoker - haven't tried it yet, but tried some of the tuna that went in with the kokanee, and it was to die for.  the ones you get out of the lake are better then when they start running, aren't they?
