I don't know about foam but did you think of Balsa wood or Cork? I've made a lot of them with the balsa.

Daffy
Ever tried IceBuster bobbers? They are a foam rubber bobber made specifically for ice fishing. I wouldn't go ice fishing without 'em.
you can see 'em at: ice buster bobbers . c m
(take out the spaces and you know what letter goes between the c and the m)

daffydone,
You might try foam pipe insulation....you can get it from the hardware store....it's an open cell foam and comes in different lengths and a couple of different densities.....I use it for fly tying etc.

Just for grins I took a piece of 1/2 " copper pipe and filed the end down so it was somewhat sharp..it poked perfect 1/2" plugs from the pipe insulation I was talking about.

Hi Gang!
I use regular 6'' long bobbers. Just like you use in the summer. They are sensitive and work well in the wind. They will sway in the wind and jig for you. I get them at wal-mart for $1.70 per pair and get the small ones. Never missed a bit yet.

This has nothing to do with ice bobbers but you guys just saved me 12.00 a year in postage.
Mom and Dad spend the winter in south Fla. catching ballyhoo before fishing the ocean Iv'e been sending down Nickle size ice bobbers for the last five yrs.
The closed cell foam will be just the ticket for them, cuz if there are ballyhoo around you can bet the barracuda are there also, it is fun cathing your own bait but not much gettin' bit off on 4lb. test.
The things ya learn here or can adapt are priceless!

HEY...If you really want to make YOUR VERY OWN bobber. Go to a Sporting Goods Store, and pick up some EAR PLUGS, yeah.........The Kind that is used for Shooting Skeet. Take a needle, Thread your FISHING line through the needle, and Go from ONE end to the OTHER.
You may need a Small Piece of Toothpick to Make sure the Line stays in place, but....From Experiance, I've found out that when the ICE WATER touches the small hole, It'll freeze up QUICK.
TRY THAT...
YOU"LL like it.
