Hi Everyone,

I have heard two stories on the difference between the white and black boots.  Some say that there is no difference at all.  Some say that the white has more insulation under the foot.  I have seen on the internet, the white ones rated for -40f and the black ones -10f.  I am not sure which is correct.  Can anyone point me in the direction of something to confirm any of this?  I was thinking of picking up some today when I will be near a surplus store that carries both.

Thanks!

Jeff

My black ones from Sportsmens Guide are rated for -30f.

I've owned a pair of mickies for about a decade now.  They are awesome as far as warmth.  My dad has the white ones and I don't see much of a difference, except color.  One drawback: the rubber will begin to crack after some time.  I don't know what the manufacturer would recommend to repair the cracks but maybe you could apply some silicone as a preventive measure?  Whatever you do...don't put them on if they've been in the cold for a while, warm them up before you put them on.  I put them on once after they sat in the truck overnight and it seriously was painful on my feet...eventually they warmed up, but not before my feet went numb

White boots-real cold, dry conditions; black boots-cold, wet conditions. Neither real good if you're doing any travelling, unless you're on x-country skis. Been around since the Korean War. AF Muckluks (SP) are for real-cold, dry snow. Never ownred any of them, never will. Prefer spending whatever extra it costs for good boots. Nuff said!!

I own a black and a white pair. If they get wet on a dip, you just wipe out the inside with a rag, new socks and your good to go. I use them in below Zero weather for 12 - 15 hours at a time and never get cold. DO NOT USE COTTON AS FIRST LAYER! It holds the moisture, and will chill you quick. Use wick-away type socks or liner socks. I also added a wool insert made for the bottom of waiter boots. It's a felt sole.
The white are thicker and are rated for colder weather. After 10 years I have no dry rot. Make sure the air valve allways stays closed, or they can rot from the inside out. Store them in an airtight container between seasons. Just like waiters, they can dry rot from flourocarbons etc.

I pour concrete and would never wear anything else in the winter. The black rubber on the toes has been torn off for 3 years now and they are still waterproof. White ones are more bulky, so get the black ones. I have worn them in Norway at -30 and my feet where the warmest part of my body.

There was an earlier subject that discussed this. It was very informative and told the difference between the two. I do remember a few things. They claim that these boots were made from a few different manufacturers. Look for Bata on the bottoms for the best. I thought it also said there was no difference between white and black as far as insulation. Could be wrong. I have the black ones made by Bata and I love them. I always used my hunting boots that I thought were waterproof. When you are drilling holes bringing water up on your feet constantly you will soon see how waterproof they arent. The Mouse boots no problem. I wish they had a little deeper tread. That is all I could think of to improve them.

Jeff, you're gonna love those boots!!!  After being out on the ice all day in sub-freezing temps, I take off my boots and STEAM comes out!!!
Never had a cold feet day since I bought them ten years ago.

Both of them (white + black) are like trying to walk with around with spare tires for boots. Your feet are warm in both but you better not have to walk very far. There like trying to pick your nose with boxing gloves - to bulky.

I use mine to deslush 4 1/2" aguers holes. Drill a hole, stick the boot in, pop it out and the suction takes the slush out. I've done it hundreds of times and I never carry a ice scoop. As far as walking in them, they are a breeze compared to a frozen foot. Let me think... pain- not good. Warm foot --- VERY good !

Make sure you get a pair that fits properly with a couple pair of socks on. I walk miles a day at times in mine, and they are like clouds. Cleats stay on very well.

I was a Logistics Management Specialist for the Department of the Army for 35 years so hope this puts some credence in what I'm saying:

The official Army definition for the Black boot is:  BOOTS COLD WEATHER: MENS RUBBER BLACK W/RELEASE VALVE

The official Army definition for the White boot is: BOOTS EXTREME COLD WEATHER: MENS RUBBER WHITE W/RELEASE VALVE

Hope this explains the difference.  Just remember, you are NOT suppose to inflate them with the vavle like a lot of people think.  It's a release valve for high altitudes.

That link has some good info.  I've always worn the white ones.  I haven't seen very many black ones up here.
