« on: Jan 06, 2007, 07:04 PM »
Here's a pic of an old jigging stick that is 40-50 yrs old, they took the time to wrap it and all, you dont see them made like that today

Anybody else got one or seen one like it?

There are ones just like that for sale in the local hardware store.   The sell for around $3.00.   Of course they are easy to make as well. they do the trick though.  That one of yours is pretty neat being an oldie.  :o<<>< :)

We had 'em when I was a kid in the '70's.  It was standard gear for Lake Champlain.  Last year, when I got back into icefishing I went to a hardware store and bought a handful of plastic ones as backup/buddy poles since I only bought two of them new-fangled ice fishing rods w/ reels.  Slip a finger under the line and you'll never miss a hit.  Still use the old style jigging stick from time to time.  They're awesome as a depth finder-- "How may turns were you down when you caught those fat perch?"

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

Ozzy...I was watching a PBS show last year on Lake Champlain and the winter traditions.  One segment of the show dealt with ice fishing and all the people were using that type of set up for the smelt.  They would find the right depth for the smelt and then bring the line in hand over hand so they could set it right back down to the same depth.

Was a pretty good show.

i have a couple of those laying around but i dont use them. my dad and his brothers swear by the old broken hockey stick rods its all my uncles use really but i am convincing them that they are good for deadbait rods but for jigging it is best to use a rod/reel combo.

I often use almost the same version.  I got it in the seventies and have adapted it with about 15" of  fly rod tip taped to the side.  It is very efficient when the perch are hitting good as you just pull and drop the line on the ice and drop the bait right down.   The fly rod tip adds a lot of fun to the initial strike.

You got a nice ice rod, and a fish bonker in 1.
The nameless men who nameless rivers travel,
And in strange valleys greet strange deaths alone;
The grim, intrepid ones who would unravel
The mysteries that shroud the Polar Zone.

We use these sticks in Champlain ourselves for smelt, I just figured I'd post the pic to see if anybody has seen or still owns any of the old sticks anymore.

I've seen the ones in the stores that are just mass produced with no creativity. My extended family actually still have about 8 of these old ones that are wrapped and all.

Figured someone might like to see an old piece of smelt fishing history

Most of our rods were made my grandpas friend a long time ago not sure when.  They were all that same style with the rap around line.  Only recently have we started using tip-ups and rods with reels.

That's a smelt stick for sure. Kind of tricky using them in deep water. My buddy was a master. We used to fish Port Henry for them. Everything is plastic nowadays. Nice antique.

I used to fish Putnam Station all the time in the 70's and 80s and we had ice before X-Mas EVERY YEAR.

I dare you to catch a 38" pike on that ;)

I used one one up on loon lake once. ( the one off rt 3 ) I learned alot about perch fishing because of it. I learned to feel for a hit, learned that deep water can hold big schools of fish, and while "feeling" for the next, my eyes wandered to the next hole.

You guys ever fish Basin harbor? I lived in vergennes VT for 5 years.

i got about 4 or 5 sets of them...its missing a dowel that goes perpendicular to the stick, and rocks on two wooden blocks.  more sensitive than any spring bobber.  still use them for perch and crappies; they're spectacular.
