Chubby Darters
« on: Nov 08, 2006, 03:41 PM »
i've read may posts about how great chubby darters are for jigging. my question is what clors and sizes are best for walleye, trout, and perch.
thanks and tight lines.

as for size it all depends on what size fish you after, On the lakes I fish I have been erring on the smaller side as we dont get many jumbo's (perch or walleye). I personally purchased a few of both the large and small sizes in both the Perch and Glow colors.

Larger one also can be working on a tip up for pike

I like perch color and the glow ones if you fish in a current like a river.  Never catch a lot with them but I think they bring fish in awsome.

I put my camera down and jigged one of those things and no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to swim in the formation the packaging says it should swim in.

pike4some try Ebay.

My favorite chubby is the gold, hands-down. I think they call it Roach.

Oh yeah- Walleye like them, too.  ;)
I've never heard of someone catching a perch or trout on one.

Try just using a small snap so it can do it's thing.
Don't tie direct, and don't use a swivel.
Start with small jigging motions and gradually work your way up.
You'll get the hang of it.

The greatest part is when you have to start replacing the hooks...

More info at Salmo's site - http://www.salmofishing.com/lures/chubby_darter.html

I like them as attractors with a dropper filled with waxies or a minnow head for perch and eyes.

Perch colors are good for perch with a dropper (Nils Master Hali chain or Northland Dropper) as it looks like a small perch eating something and his "buddies" come in to pick off the scraps that didn't make it in to his mouth.  Good luck!  ;D

I think I got most of mine at Gander for $6.79-ish, I know they are in the winter cabelas catalog also.

Plus I'm Polish so I think that helps.

I have had good luck catching Waldo's on them.
I have watched them come screaming up 10 feet off the bottom to hit them on the fall.

I have heard you do not need to use any bait with these. You just need to twitch the rod and they swim in circles. Just what I have heard though.

I have used Chubby Darters quite a bit as well. I have tried a few colors but have had my best luck with the gold/orange, silver and hot perch. I usually don't tip them with any bait, maybe a minnow head sometime. They react a little different than a normal crankbait, by dropping tail first, and then darting upward when jigged. I have found the fish have to be fairly aggresive for them to work well.
I gotta chubby
