building Portable Ice Shanty, tips?
« on: Sep 20, 2006, 09:00 AM »
I am planning on building a Portable Iceshanty this year on my own. I was wondering if anyone here has tips for doing this or has done it themselves. Right now i'm looking to use PVC piping and wood. What would you suggest as a covering? i'm thinking of either buying replacement covering from a campany that makes ice shanties or just using tarp of some sort, i just really want something to stop the wind.

any help appreciated, thank you.

for what it will cost you in time and materials its cheaper to buy a portable and it will be lighter and stronger and fold up smaller

they make real cheap wind breaks, heck you could even buy a ground bling for hunting for $40 and use that, i use the same tent style, mine was $200 and fits 3 people with gear, crowkiller is right, for the time, price and size of a homemade portable, you would be alot better with looking into buying one, smaller, lighter, and cheaper
hers a couple ideas

Shanty 1

Shanty 2

or you can try these for cheaper, i see people on the ice with them alot

Shanty 3

I have to agree with Crowkiller, I have seen alot of homemade contraptions on the ice and none seem to work very well.  Not sure what type of fishing you do but pulling one behind a sled or 4-wheeler will eat them up and rattle them apart.  I have looked at alot of them over the years and tried to come up with the best features of all of them and ended up buying a fishtrap pro.
