When fishing gets tough for bluegills
« on: May 07, 2002, 11:27 AM »
When the fishing gets tough for bluegills try 1lb test line and no.12 chartruse green jig tipped with a waxworm for better action. Change your jigging motion to trigger fish that won't bite. Slow : Raise or lower jig 1/2" to 1/4" at a time very slowly in the zone where you think the fish are. Fast: Jig hard and fast above the fish zone then slowly lower letting it drop free fall the last couple of inches. High: During March and April Wisconsin late ice bluegills can be found less than 1 foot under the ice.

Crappie Hunter,
What is a rat finky? Who is it sold by? Do you like a certain color? I'm always looking to try something new. Does this method catch crappie too?

                                        Thanks

Rat Finkies are made by Custom Jigs and Spins.  http://www.customjigsandspins.com
They work for most panfish and perch.  The Shrimpos are good too.

i always find my biggest blue gills on the out side edge of a large weedy flat.  Light (1-2lb test) line, and very small jigs are a must.  usually i end up in about 10-14 feet of water by midwinter.  Also, the blue gills will suspend, come later in the winter.  thats when you need electronics, or a darkend fish shelter.

TUSH;

You can get Rat Finkys at Gander Mountian in Fort Wayne if you are in that area.

When fishing gets tough, try sizing the line down. I use monofilament sewing thread. I also like a very small jig such as a swiss dot. A spring bobber is a must to see these finicky light biters. I look for big gills in 20 to 35 feet of water over large mud flats. The fish sometimes will suspend so use your electronics to seek and destroy..

My kids and I catch some nice 'gills just off the first drop in the pond. If we are in 6' of water we catch little 'gills, when we move out to 10' plus of water, and stil only drop down 5 to 6', we pick up lots more bigger fish, as big as my hand and a few bigger.

WHEN THE FISH JUST ARENT BITING, I TRY TO USE A DIFFRENT BAIT ON MY 2 JIGGING RODS AND FISH THEM AT DIFFRENT DEPTHS.  I PREFER EITHER WAXIES OR MAGGOTS ON ONE OR THE OTHER ROD.  I ALSO WILL PUT ONE ROD AT A COMPLETELY DIFFRENT DEPTH TO SEE IF ANY WONDERING FISH ARE AT A DIFFRENT DEPTH.  USUALLY AFTER THE DAY IS DONE, I WILL PRODUCE SOME FISH, WHICH IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN NONE AT ALL.

Try using small tear drop with a wiggler. When i cant catch them on waxworms or mousies a small tear drop and a livley wiggler almost always works.

The other day I was catching agressive suspended gills 10' over 20'.  I'd bring my bait above them and they'd slam it (size 10 fat boy techniglo red tipped with 2 maggots).  Moving from hole to hole, the fishing was slow but when I marked one, I'd catch it.  Then all of a sudden, they all acted the same snubbing my offering like it was poison.  They'd follow it up and watch it then swim off.  I tried scaling down, tried waxies, tried mousees, changed colors, jigging techniques and locations, nothing worked.  Then, I tried a 1/80 oz. chartreuse jighead tipped with a Custom Jigs n Spins chartreuse glow finesse tail and they hammered it as if it was candy.  I caught a dozen more in the next half hour before having to leave.  Lesson learned?  The jighead combo was the right shape, size, action and profile to trigger strikes.  Tiny Rat finkees may have worked too tipped with the tail.

Also, if you are fishing a vertical jig and it doesn't work, try a horizontal one instead and vice versa...

Hey nate,
I found also the best place to find bluegills are where theres water still flowing into the lake like some lakes should still have some creeks running in. So, I set up by them and they'll come in to feed so I set up near by and have fun.

GREEN GLOW RAT FINKIE TIPPED WITH ONE WAXIE, and shallow weed beds, always a winning combo on my ponds.

The gills I am fishing for I have been catching in 3 feet of water. The lake itself is only 12 ft deep. They are in a large lily pad field, I have also caught some really nice crappies and perch in there also. I hope to be ice fishing in April, that would be a first.    :)
