But what about the (a few of my favorite indicators): Thickness of corn husks? Woodpeckers sharing trees? Cow hair thickness? Bands & thickness of raccoon tails? Spider web size? Pig stick gathering? Insect marching behavior? Thickness of the Woollybear caterpillar orange band?

There are some Maples starting to change in southern WI, but it was over 80F this weekend too with no major cool down in the next week. Hoping the bottom drops out on the temps in mid/late October to cool the lakes down for an early to mid December start to the ice season

When you have warm temps like this, it means that the jet stream is holding back the artic air, verse the cold artic air coming down and mixing like it should. It starts to build in pressure then one day it will bust and come down causing really cold temps. so what you are wanting is a very real possibility. If I'm lucky here by thanksgiving a guy might see pond ice he can Walk on.

Yes. And adult beverages and extra food but do not steal the sticks the pigs have gathered.

Just read an article on weather.com that the possibility for a La Niņa are increased from what they were. Also said conditions were near what they were going into winter 09-10 which was a good cold snowy winter. I could do without a lot of snow, but if there is cold weather with it bring it on.

That winter we had a ground blizzard here on Wednesday Dec. 9th and it shut down ALL traffic. On Dec.12th we were fishing on 4" of ice and the safe hard water stayed until March 22nd. That was a nice long season!

December 1st 2009 it was damn near 70 during the day in central Iowa. Two days later it was in the 20's and stayed that way all winter long. Here's to being optimistic. Global warming works both ways let's hope it's in our favor this winter cause the last 3 have sucked!

My oaks have been dropping acorns like crazy in SE Iowa, much more than last year - not much walnuts compared to last year though

There is a hickory tree where we golf and I've never seen so many nuts. I was looking at it on Sunday, the tree is absolutely loaded and the ground is covered, like walking on golf balls!
