Lake Winnipeg Ice thickness and duration
« on: Jul 11, 2017, 08:40 AM »
Hi everyone!

First post, I'm Arnaud from Belgium. I'm having troubes to find any information regarding Lake winnipeg ice thickness through the year.
I'm planning a snowkite trip through Canada including Lake Winnipeg's entire lenght.
Can anyone tell me at which time of the year the lake unfreeze and it's not safe to practice backcountry skiing or snowkite on it anymore?

Thanks in advance!

Arnaud.

Welcome. Are you serious? It's the 10th largest body of water. There's no way you could do the south and north basin. It's a very unpredictable lake and canbe very dangerous. Thickness is 24-60" thick. Varies all the time. In your shoes, I would do the south basin. Start on the east side at balsom bay, go west to chalet beach. Cell service and emergency help are factors. As is the cold. Good luck

Oh, ice out is usually June, but break up can start as early as March

last time a road right across the lake it was 27KM I think, that would be a long kite ride.

There were two guys at Balsam last year tearing it up , some amazing high jumps ! Those kites took off and they were gone in seconds so i can't imagine it taking that long to cross by the south side
Enjoy The Ride ,You only Get One Chance
