Trip help
« on: May 23, 2017, 08:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

I know this isn't the best time to be posting on the site for a lot of people to see this, but I am starting to think about a trip for this coming winter. I want to take my dad some place and get on some fish. We live in central Iowa so I was looking at probably some place in Minnesota. We would probably fish two days so we would need a night or two in a hotel. What are your thoughts about Mille Lac? Or are there any other good lakes maybe even closer to Iowa?

Thanks for any tips.

my son ,n, i have been more impressed with Leech Lake than M.L. ,but we enjoy pike on tip ups and jigging perch more so than walleye. ( i know, i know, sacrilige in minn., but thats how we roll) Americinn in Walker is reasonable , or rent a sleeper from walker rentals ,n, fish while you sleep. put live bait down on rattle reels for wallys     at nite.  i have no other suggs. wire

Mille Lacs was excellent last winter. The down side is it's a big lake and depending on weather it can have pressure ridges and cracks to contend with. Being you are driving a long distance and only staying for a couple of days I would use a guide. In my opinion very much worth the fee for the piece of mind not contending with mother natures offerings on the pond.

If this interests you let me know and I will give you a name of a first class guy who will put you on fish. Mille Lacs has a very tight slot so it is basically catch and release which for some may not be appealing.

I'd go to Mille Lacs. Not as far north and much better fishing on Mille Lacs last winter than was on Leech.

yes, son ,n, i and friend have  fished it several times( brainard contest). 1st time in 40-50 below wind chill according to contest radio announcer. very well run contest. super strict on what you can carry onto ice. no shelters, ALL containers opened and inspected, no driving, live     entry fish only, lie detector test to winners, supposedly( don,t know about this, i never won) but we enjoy it immensely. more a B.S session with people we,ve never met before more than a serious contest for us. ask everyone if they are ice shantiers( is that a word ?)  and explain what that is to non-members. good time for us. wire

Lake Winnipeg would be an option. Is it still going good for the giant greenback walleye?

Yes. ;)

Last Mountain Lake in Saskachewan is another good option.

Saskatchewan would be fun, but a very long drive from me.

It's my home lake. The nets hit the big fish hard this year. It was a grind to find big fish. Not like in years past.
