Equipment Sled/trailer
« on: May 04, 2017, 03:33 PM »
Fellow Ice Fishers, I know the season is still months away, but need to start planning to build a equipment sled to drag behind my Max IV 6 wheel aatv. If any of you have built or purchased one I would like to see a picture to get ideas. I plan on putting my two man Jason mitchell shanty and misc. gear. Any help is deeply appreciated. Thanks
Wishing You All Straight Shooting, Tight Lines and a Limit of Fun

You should be able to get a pretty good idea by searching this site for "Smitty Sled".
Good things come to those who bait.

Here's a bunch of pics of my freight shed I built a couple of years ago.
It has hauled about 40,000#'s of materials out to my cabin. ;)
Should give you some ideas.

What I do is: I tow my wheeler to the lake with a 5'x7' trailer then I hook up my trailer to my wheeler then load my gear
out that way, when the snow got to deep I put skies under my trailer wheels. If the snow gets to deep for a wheeler I'll
                    use my sons snow machine!

What is the rope that's tied at the end of each cross piece for?

What is the rope that's tied at the end of each cross piece for?

I wanted it to look authentic.
Most native made komatiks are held together this way with no screws or nails.
Mine is screwed and glued as well.
In the high arctic the ground is very uneven and being held together with rope makes the sled flexible and less likely to break.
I know if my screws snap it will still be held together. ;)

bored from not ice fishing, now the walleye season is open and all we're getting is rain. Got a notification from IS so I thought I would look around and see what's going on. Drifter, that's one fine looking sled you've built, I had thoughts of building a big sled to haul my stuff out on the ice, similar to a smitty sled, but your's is the way to go. Is your's built to track in the ski ruts from your snowmobile? or doesn't it matter. I like the tow bar connection. Valve springs? used them for lots of things. Good build, and thanks for the pics.

Same width as the skis on my sled.
And yes, valve springs.  ;D
