Because you're able to fish a smaller presentation in deeper water with more feel on the rod

He asked and I answered! If he had asked why, I would have gotten more in depth! It can also depend on the depth he's fishing, species, etc....  Cost can be a factor also! There's a lot to be taken into consideration and I  apologize  for seeming to be a wise azz! ;)

Although they shine in deeper water presentation I use mine in shallow water as they punch the slush allowing you to cover more water w/o clearing holes .When that shallow your sonar cone isn't covering much bottom and light penetration from your hole can spook fish .

the wire the hooks are made of are much finer so they are much smaller diameter. this also means more hook sets. the weight is what you get used to using and after trying tungsten, you probably will never go back to lead.

when i started using them, my buddy said no way would he pay 3$ for a jig until i kept out fishing him. he went out and spent 500$ on them so he wouldn't get out fished again (in his mind) but he still gets out fished at times.

get a good fly box to hold them that floats so you don't ever loose them.

I believe I have seen times where the fall was too quick and fish spooked as a result, but more times than not, I am starting with the tungsten.

When you have a school of fish with small ones up top & bigger fish on the bottom, your jig gets down to the bottom much quicker & u miss the dinks. My experience anyway. 😎

I won't disagree with that. Although for the most part I always tend to start with very active presentations and tone it down as dictated rather than miss an insanely hot bite.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

i see this happen when you plow thru the stack of suspended fish trying to fish from the bottom of the stack or even the middle of it.

all you have to do is stay up high above all of the fish and make the aggressive fish come to you. then get closer to the mass as they get fished out.
most fish prefer biting from under the bait so when you take your bait under them, they tend to spread out and get spooked maybe from it. they at least have to move to get under it tho before they bite. it's not the speed of the drop ever for me that  spooks them.
it's a great problem to have. i call it a turkey shoot.

I use the tungsten all year. They work great in rivers, and off piers. No float needed, just feel the jig working.
I do use a float while in a boat, with a small tungsten. Makes the slip bobber work better.
The only time I won't use them is when there is a good chance of loosing the jig.

I like them for pretty much all the reasons already mentioned ,,,,, faster drop and better feel, mostly.

This is why I leave some lead and flies in my box. 95% of my Jigs are tungsten. For the days they want a slower drop and some flutter I toss on some lead. I see a lot of guys discard their old lead Jigs or new guys won't buy em. They are a thing of the past but should not be forget and kept in the arsenal.

I love tungsten jigs. Gives you the opportunity to down size, get down there quicker. Also denser than lead which gives you a better mark on your sonar.

here in MA, your choices are tungsten or tin. Lead is banned
