Some Sexy Ice!!!!

The melt has stared here this week and some pretty sexy ice was lurking beneath the ice road on my lake.
This electric blue ice is sweet!!! We often get ice like this but not a huge section like this.
Usually there are small patches here and there.

Hard to say as it's all about temps.
I would say a couple to three weeks maybe longer depending on weather.

The Tyndall effect( a physics law)...  simple is the Ice has to be crystal clear(translucent)...to give the blue color reflecting back...

The ice in the "road" is generally alot more stable than surrounding ice. Especially if this is an active haul road. Maintenence for them is pretty cool

Wouldn't the water have some minerals in it for that deep blue color?
I know that clear, clean water will look blue from how the ice diffuses the light spectrum, but to get that deep a color I would suspect some minerals in the water.


Either that or a plane dumped it load of toilet water and that's where it landed...

That is some very cool ice drifter, thanks for sharing. We get ice that color here at Bear lake but its definitely due to the minerals in this body of water

That ice looks awesome. I'm sure you don't jump out and drill a hole, but just curious how thick you think it is? There are places in northern Maine that still have close to three feet of ice (the ice fishing season was extended to April 16th). There must be places you can ice fish into May in Alaska.

I see a lot of yellow patches on the ice here............Unfort unately it's urine. Just plain nasty! (I don't do it!)
